CSK vs RCB, IPL 2024: Mustafizur dents Bengaluru batting as Chennai triumphs in season opener

Chennai Super Kings did ‘CSK things’ and Royal Challengers Bengaluru did ‘RCB things’ as the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicked off in grand fashion at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here on Friday.

It was the early onslaught from Rachin Ravindra that really made the difference between the two sides. While RCB too had a quick start, it was not able to sustain it. CSK could do that courtesy of 37 off 15 from Rachin and Ajinkya Rahane’s 19-ball 28. There was a brief period where two wickets gave some hope to Faf & Co but Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja got together to end that.

Joseph to Dube, SIX! Way too short and Dube gets the invitation to pull it over mid-wicket. FOUR leg byes down to fine leg to win the match by six wickets.

Green again. Jadeja taps to the on side with soft hands, hoping to pick two runs but some sharp work in the field allows only a single. FOUR! On his body, Dube hooks it off his back foot. A wide to follow from Green. Dube uppercuts to collect three more. Four more runs from the over make it 12 off it.

Siraj is back for his third over. Jadeja is swift in pulling the ball on the on side but cannot quite breach the fence. Another seven-run over.

Glenn Maxwell to Jadeja. SIX! Jadeja takes a long stride on his front foot to get to the pitch and lofts it over the bowler’s head. A single too long on the next ball. Four dots on the trot for Dube.

Alzarri Joseph for the first time. SIX! Way too short first up and Rachin pummels it behind square. Ajinkya Rahane gets off the mark with a single to third man. Rachin tries to swipe at a delivery outside off; it is in the direction of mid-off but falls short. Eleven runs from the over.

Dayal to Ruturaj, one run with a tap to third man. FOUR! Angling down leg to Rachin who nudges it wide of short fine leg. FOUR again! Siraj starts his second over with a wide. BOUNDARY! Siraj strays on the pads and Rachin clips it past the square leg. CHANCE! Rachin’s attempted flick takes a leading edge but thankfully flies over the bowler. SIX to finish the over! A top edge off a pull shot, and the ball lands over the fine leg rope.

Mohammed Siraj to Ruturaj, FOUR! A boundary off the first delivery. It is pitched short and the CSK skipper latches onto it with a pull shot. FOUR more, this one through point. Ruturaj drives this delivery outside off. It hangs in the air but flies between the fielders and runs away to the fence.

The final total looked a distant dream when RCB was struggling at 42 for three at the end of the PowerPlay. Faf du Plessis gave the side a strong start which withered away with three quick wickets. Virat Kohli and Cameron Green arrested the slide for a bit before Anuj Rawat and Dinesh Karthik added 95 runs for the sixth wicket, taking the side to a respectable 173. But Karthik admitted this is a batting pitch and that the RCB bowlers need to bowl “out of their skins” to win.

Tushar to bowl the final over of the innings. He starts with a WIDE. The plan looks fairly clear. Tushar wants to target yorker-length deliveries outside off stump and in that process bowls two wides while RCB loses two reviews reviewing two calls for wide. FOUR! Dinesh gets an outside edge which runs away at third man. Karthik misses to get a connection in the final delivery and Dhoni nails the direct hit to run out Anuj Rawat who was just shy of making his ground. Anyhow a brilliant comeback from the wicket-keeper duo which added 95 off 50 for the sixth wicket and took RCB to 173.

Mustafizur with his final over. Dinesh Karthik lofts it over infield and runs two as RCB gets to 150. Mustafizur to Rawat, SIX! This young man can bat! He walks down the track and hits Mustafizur for a straight six. FOUR! This time Karthik plays fine and it runs away at the boundary. 16 off this over.

Tushar Deshpande to bowl the 18th over. Karthik changes his stance and tries to play the reverse sweep, Tushar follows him but bowls way outside offside and it is a WIDE. Tushar to Dinesh, SIX! Brilliant shot! A flat-batted straight six. Tushar to Rawat, SIX! This time full and in the batter’s slot as Rawat smokes it over deep mid-wicket for a gigantic six. Tushar to Rawat, SIX! Full toss and easy pickings for Rawat, who clears the long-on boundary. FOUR! Slower one from Tushar and Rawat plays fine to get 25 from this over.

Dangerman Mustafizur comes back into the attack. FOUR! Rawat shuffles and pulls the short ball for a boundary. Another excellent over from Mustafizur who gives only seven from this over after going for a boundary and bowling a wide.

Mahesh Theekshana with his fourth over. FOUR! Karthik sweeps with authority and and ball races away for a boundary at deep square leg. SIX! Full toss on offer for Karthik and he rocks back and lofts it over deep long-on to end the over with a maximum.

Deepak Chahar to bowl his final over. FOUR! Full toss for Rawat and he placed it over extra-cover for a boundary. Four singles in the next four deliveries before Rawat plays an uppercut for a boundary to finish the over which also takes RCB over 100.

Anuj Rawat and Dinesh Karthik are looking to rebuild from hereon as there are still six overs left and the duo are not looking for any risky boundary shots. Just seven from Jadeja’s over.
