The deceased Anuj Thapan, 23, ended his life inside the toilet of the lock-up using a bedsheet. He was rushed to the State-run GT Hospital, where he was declared dead during treatment, the official said.

An accidental death report will be registered at Azad Maidan police station in south Mumbai.

“One of the accused in the case, namely, Anuj Thapan, has reportedly attempted suicide,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Datta Nalawade had confirmed earlier in the day.

The accused was in the Crime Branch lock-up within the Mumbai Police Commissionerate office premises. The Crime Branch claims that Thapan provided weapons to the shooters, who had fired five rounds outside the actor’s house. He was arrested from Punjab along with Sonu Subhash Chander (37) on April 25 and brought to Mumbai.

Two others, Vicky Gupta and Sagar Pal who allegedly fired the shots, are also in police custody. Both were seen on CCTV leaving the area on a motorcycle on the night the incident happened.

All the four accused are known to be directly or indirectly connected with jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, whose main activities according to the anti-terror body National Investigation Agency (NIA) involve kidnapping, murder, extortion for ransom, cross-border smuggling of sophisticated weapons and narcotics, in-land smuggling of contraband, and illegal liquor smuggling.

The Mumbai Crime Branch last month said it had found strong evidence against Lawrence Bishnoi and his brother Anmol Bishnoi, after which the Crime Branch announced both as the most wanted suspects in the case.

Salman Khan House Firing: Two ‘Shooters’ Taken From Bhuj, Gujarat, To Appear In Court Today

A Mumbai court will hear the apprehensioned “shooters” in the Salman Khan house fire case on Tuesday morning. News18 was informed by sources that the accused, Vicky Gupta, 24, and Sagar Pal, 21, will travel by plane from Bhuj, Gujarat, to Mumbai at approximately 8:50 a.m.

Social media users have started sharing an image of the two handcuffed with Mumbai Crime Branch officials.

On April 14, bullets are said to have been fired outside Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s home in the Galaxy Apartments in Mumbai’s Bandra neighborhood by residents of West Champaran, Bihar, Vicky Gupta, and Sagar Pal.

In a coordinated operation, the Mumbai Police Crime Branch and the West Kutch Police from Bhuj, Gujarat, made the arrests late on Monday. They have larceny and chain snatching charges lodged against them, and they are history sheeters. The initial inquiry has validated their affiliation with the gang led by Lawrence Bishnoi.

Around five in the morning on Sunday, the accused fired four shots outside Salman Khan’s residence, the Galaxy Apartments in Bandra, and then left the scene. Top sources claim that there was a prearranged plot behind the firing. The two miscreants had allegedly rented a home for a month in the Panvel neighborhood of Navi Mumbai, which is about 12 km from Salman Khan’s land.

Following the dismissal, Salman Khan was called by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who also had a meeting with the Mumbai Police Commissioner.

In response to the gunshots that were fired at the actor’s residence, Salim Khan, Salman Khan’s father, stated there was no need for concern. Salim Khan stated in an interview with CNN News18, “There is nothing to tell.” There’s no reason to fear, they’re just after attention,” he remarked.
