Ab Ki Baar, KKR, Kolkata Club Wins its Third IPL Title after Crushing Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In the most unbalanced final in IPL history, KKR outsmarts SRH to win their first title since 2014, and Gambhir becomes the first captain and mentor to win the trophy.

Venkatesh Iyer was on strike, and the Kolkata Knight Riders dugout was on its feet as they were only one run away from a resounding eight-wicket victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 final. The left-hander paddle-swept for a single, setting up loud celebrations in the KKR camp.

IPL 2024 Final: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Sunrisers Hyderabad

The entire team came out to celebrate with the two Iyers, Venkatesh and Shreyas, and the owners were overjoyed in the stands as their wait for an IPL victory was finally over. The cameras kept hunting for mentor Gautam Gambhir, who was busy offering bear embraces to the entire group while smiling broadly. The DJ instantly turned to Chak De India, and the party began for the Kolkata Knight Riders, the IPL 2024 champions.

The IPL final has frequently been a rematch of Qualifier 1, and the title match of the 2024 edition was no exception. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were the two most consistent teams during the regular rounds, but the Playoffs are a different beast.

Even the best in the business have found it difficult to dominate the knockouts, and SRH certainly faced KKR’s heat this year. Not once, but twice as after Qualifier 1 they were outsmarted by Shreyas Iyer & Co. in what turned out to be the most lopsided final in IPL history.

SRH just didn’t have enough runs on the board and became the first side to get bowled out in the final, that too without facing 20 overs. 113 – SRH’s third-lowest total in the IPL and the lowest total in an IPL final – was never going to pose any challenge to this KKR unit and mere formalities were left to be completed in the second innings of the match.

There was a consolation wicket of Sunil Narine early in the innings but just one-way traffic after that as Venkatesh Iyer and Rahmanullah Gurbaz put on 91 runs in lightning-quick time to put the side on home stretch.

Bowling masterclass

The batting, however, was never going to be a point of discussion today as the night was set-up by the bowlers. KKR served a bowling masterclass in the title clash and Mitchell Starc, the most expensive player in the league’s history, led from the front with a probing spell which put SRH on the mat.

Even before he bowled his first delivery, the quick was in the opposition’s head as Travis Head decided not to take strike. Starc had dismissed him the last time two sides met in Qualifier 1 and it was young Abhishek Sharma in the firing line now.

From the first delivery, there was enough movement and the fifth ball which came out of the left-armer’s hand was a ripper! Pitched on length, it swung away late and crashed into the stumps.

Abhishek stood shocked and the SRH dugout wore a worried look as celebrations began in the KKR camp. In consecutive games now, KKR clipped the wings of high-flying SRH openers and never allowed their innings to get any momentum whatsoever.

Head stayed away from strike vs Starc but was dismissed for a golden duck by Vaibhav Arora from the other end. Rahul Tripathi came and went, and the batters to follow had no answers to the versatile seamers of KKR. If Starc was moving them at a brisk pace, Arora had a nice natural angle into the right-hander and Harshit Rana was mixing his pace smartly.

There was just on respite from both ends and even when seamers were given a break, Andre Russell and the spin-twins – Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine – sustained pressure in the middle overs.

Pat Cummins & Co. kept losing wickets at regular intervals and never had a partnership going their way. It was just the second time in the IPL that six different bowlers picked a wicket. That’s how good KKR were in the title clash.

The only thing which didn’t go KKR’s way was the toss as they outplayed the opposition in every department to register a very comprehensive win.

Anthony Edwards Subtly makes Fun of Karl-Anthony Towns’ Infamous “After All That” Saying During Press Conference.

Anthony Edwards jested on his teammate Karl-Anthony Towns during the post-game interview after the Timberwolves clinched the Western Conference semifinal series against the Denver Nuggets. Edwards
subtly made fun of Towns’ infamous “after all that” saying by humorously repeating the line after Towns said it during the interview.
Edwards repeating his teammate was likely a throwback to Towns’ viral moment of him saying “after all that” in a different voice over a year ago during an unofficial interview.

Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards combined for 39 points as the Timberwolves defeated the reigning champions 98-90 in Game 7 to advance to the Western Conference finals. Towns led the team’s winning effort, registering 23 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
The Timberwolves’ stunning comeback from a 15-point hole at halftime set an NBA playoff record for the biggest turnaround in Game 7. Edwards was instrumental in the comeback, starting with four points and three assists at halftime before finishing with 16 points, eight
rebounds, seven assists and two steals.

“Man, f**k them 9 years”: Anthony Edwards hilariously interrupts Karl-Anthony Towns during career reflection

Before the current season, the Minnesota Timberwolves were unable to win a single playoff series since 2004. The team missed the postseason for 14 consecutive years since then before ending their drought in 2018.
Drafted first overall by the Timberwolves in 2015, Karl-Anthony Towns experienced the organization’s struggles firsthand. The four-time NBA All-Star missed the playoffs in five of his first six years in the league and only won his first playoff series in his ninth year.
Towns reflected upon his nine-year Timberwolves tenure during the post-game interview after clinching the series against the Nuggets on Sunday.

Edwards was drafted first overall by the Timberwolves in 2020. The 22- year-old led the team to the playoffs for three straight seasons and
has established himself as one of the league’s premier young stars.
Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards will look to make a deeper playoff run as the Minnesota Timberwolves face the Dallas Mavericks next for the Western Conference finals.

Sunil Chhetri, Indian Football Team Captain, Announces Retirement; World Cup Qualifier Against Kuwait to be his Swansong.

The top goal scorer for India, Sunil Chhetri, has declared his retirement from international football.

The most decorated football player in India, Sunil Chhetri, has declared his retirement from international competition. The 39-year-old Chhetri announced in a video posted on the social networking site X that the forthcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifier between India and Kuwait in Kolkata on June 6 will be his final match.

“The recollection of the last 19 years is a combination of duty, pressure and immense joy. I never thought that these are the many games I would play for the country, good or bad but now I did but these last one and half two months I did. And this (the feeling) was very strange. I was probably going towards the decision that this game (against Kuwait) is going to be my last,” Chhetri said.

Sunil Chhetri, a name synonymous with Indian football, boasts a glittering career spanning over two decades. This gifted forward has not only dominated domestic leagues but also carved his name on the international stage. Call it coincidences or a twist of fate, Chhetri will play his final game in the city where he made his India debut 19 years ago. India’s game against Kuwait is a must-win to stay in contention for a World Cup Qualifiers Round 3 berth. Currently ranked second in Group A with four points from four games, India travel to face Qatar in their final group stage match. Only the top two teams progress.

“There is one day that I never forget and remember it quite often is the first time I played for my country man, it was unbelievable. But the day before, morning of the day, Sukhi sir, my first national team coach, in the morning he came to me and he’s like, you’re going to start? I can’t tell you how I was feeling man. I took my jersey, I sprayed some perfume on it, I have no idea why. So that day, everything that happened, once he told me, from breakfast to lunch and to the game and to my first goal in my debut, to conceding late 80th minute, that day is probably that I will never forget and is one of the best days of my national team journey,” Chhetri added.

“And the moment I told myself first, that yes, this is the game that is going to be my last, is when I started recollecting everything. It was so strange, I started thinking about this game, that game, this coach, that coach, that team, that member, that ground, that away match, this good game, that bad game, all my individual performances, everything came, all the flashes came. So I decided that this is it.”

Watch Sunil Chhetri’s retirement speech below:

Chhetri’s journey began in 2002 with Mohun Bagan. His talent soon propelled him abroad, with stints at the USA’s Kansas City Wizards (2010) and Portugal’s Sporting CP reserves (2012). Back in India, he donned the jerseys of prestigious clubs like East Bengal, Dempo, Mumbai City FC, and currently, Bengaluru FC. It’s with Bengaluru that Chhetri truly flourished, lifting trophies like the I-League (2014, 2016), ISL (2019), and Super Cup (2018). He even led them to the AFC Cup final in 2016.

Chhetri, the goal-scoring machine

While club success is impressive, Sunil Chhetri’s true magic lies in his international exploits. He has been instrumental in India’s victories in the Nehru Cup (2007, 2009, 2012) and the SAFF Championship (2011, 2015, 2021). Most significantly, his contribution to India’s 2008 AFC Challenge Cup win secured their first AFC Asian Cup appearance in 27 years.

But it’s his goalscoring prowess that sets Chhetri apart. Since his debut goal in 2002, he has amassed a staggering tally. With 94 goals in 150 international appearances, he sits comfortably as the third-highest active international goal-scorer, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Argentina’s Lionel Messi. This achievement places him fourth on the all-time list.

Chhetri’s international debut came in 2005, followed by his first goal against Pakistan. A defining moment arrived in the 2011 SAFF Championship, where he surpassed Indian legend I.M. Vijayan’s record of six goals in a single edition by scoring a phenomenal seven, propelling India to victory and becoming the national team’s highest scorer.

Across club and country, Chhetri’s goal tally stands at a remarkable 252 in 515 appearances, averaging almost a goal every two games. This consistency and talent haven’t gone unnoticed. In 2022, FIFA honoured him with a documentary titled “Captain Fantastic,” celebrating his journey and achievements.

Women who changed sport: With speed and style, Florence Griffith Joyner moved athletics from the sports page to the front page

Florence Griffith Joyner reinvented track and field. Both her 100m and 200m world record still stand. Find out more about her legacy.

Athletes do not come much like Flo-Jo again.

At the Olympic Summer Games in Seoul, 1988, Florence Griffith Joyner won gold in the 100, 200, and 4×100 meters. She also holds the world records in these events, which have stood for almost 30 years.

Beyond the music, however, Flo-Jo became a cultural icon due to her distinct style and her ability to combine athletics and fashion; this legacy continues to this day. The legendary tennis player Serena Williams demonstrated in 2021 how much of an influence Flo-Jo still has by competing at the Australian Open in a one-legged catsuit—the sprinter’s trademark during her record-breaking 1988 season.

Williams told journalists based in Melbourne, “Flo-Jo [and] watching her fashion, which was constantly changing; her outfits were always amazing. “Flo-Jo served as the inspiration for this design. “Oh my God, this is so brilliant,” I thought to myself.

Flo-Jo’s talent extended far beyond her early 1989 competition retirement. She became a representation of female strength, dabbling in acting, fashion, and doll design. She also actively became a spokesperson for numerous brands and for President Bill Clinton’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Her teammate and then sister-in-law Jackie Joyner-Kersee told PBS last year that “Florence transcended our sport.” “She moved track and field to the main page from the sports section. She attracted additional people who were curious about our sport as well as about her.”

Florence Griffith Joyner: World records & Olympic golds

Considering the fact that the American team did not participate in the 1980 Moscow Olympics, Griffith Joyner was a two-time Olympian and three-time qualifying competitor. She won her first of five Olympic medals, a silver medal in the 200 meters, four years later in Los Angeles in 1984.

Boss Klopp warns Liverpool of ‘super-disciplined’ Atalanta!

“There are now only great teams left in the competition,” Klopp told a pre-match press conference on Wednesday.

When Liverpool plays Atalanta in a Europa League quarterfinal at Anfield on Thursday, manager Jurgen Klopp has instructed his team to get ready for a “super-disciplined” Atalanta.

Although Atalanta defeated Sporting Lisbon of Portugal in the previous round, they have only triumphed in two of their last nine games in all competitions. However, Klopp anticipates that Atalanta, under veteran manager Gian Piero Gasperini, will cause Liverpool issues. “Only elite teams remain in the competition,” Klopp stated on Wednesday during a press conference before the game.

“It’s truly amazing, and we understand what Atalanta stands for.” For years now, Gasperini has been doing an amazing job there, and playing against Italian clubs has never been easy. We need to perform at our highest level to advance past these two legs and into the next round because they are dangerous and well-coordinated tactically,” he continued.

During his final season at Anfield, Klopp mentioned that Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker, and Diogo Jota—all of whom had been out since February—might play against Atalanta. Klopp remarked, “Obviously, we didn’t rush it with the boys.” This indicates that they trained extensively on their own. Trent and Diogo had been working together for two or three weeks and were able to perform extremely good training.

Sri Lanka Won Toss & Elect To Bat First: Shakib back for Bangladesh

The hosts were trailing 0–1 in the series and up against Hasan Mahmud, a medium-pacer making his debut in Chattogram.

In the second Test match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Chattogram, Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat.

After Kasun Rajitha sustained a back injury, Asitha Fernando took over, and the visiting team chose to continue with a three-seamer setup. The only other required alteration was this one.

Shakib Al Hasan

Meanwhile, Bangladesh gained further momentum with the return of Shakib Al Hasan. In April of last year, Shakib Al Hasan participated in his last Test match against Ireland.

Hasan Mahmud, a right-arm medium-pacer, was another newbie. Shoriful Islam and Nahid Rana were not allowed to stay with the hosts. Bangladesh had just two quicks left for the game as a result.

Chattogram has one of the best batting surfaces in the nation in terms of pitch and conditions; the field appears to be dry with very little grass. At Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, the past three Test matches between these two teams have all resulted in draws.

There was cloud cover before the day began as well, but there is a little probability of showers on the first and last days even though the rain should mostly avoid us.

Sri Lanka won the first Test by a dominant 328 runs, and they currently lead the two-match series 1-0. Following three matches each, both sides had equal points in the World Test Championship table (12 total)
