Important lessons from the Mavericks and Timberwolves’ first game

The Dallas Mavericks won Game 1 of their dramatic opening series against the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minneapolis on Wednesday, setting up a thrilling start to the NBA’s Western Conference playoffs.

Trailing 83-82 going into the fourth quarter, Luka Doncic scored a game-high 33 points to spark a comeback that saw the Mavericks win 108-105.

Throughout the first half, neither Doncic nor Anthony Edwards of Minnesota were very consistent, which kept the game tight the entire time. But Kyrie Irving scored a game-high twenty-four points in the first half to keep Dallas in it, and Doncic steadied himself over the next two quarters.

What is your biggest takeaway from Game 1?

  • Tim MacMahon: The Mavericks are in uncharted territory, winning a Game 1 under coach Jason Kidd for the first time in six tries. Dallas’ star duo of Doncic and Irving — coming off a pretty quiet second-round series, by their standards — took turns carrying Dallas in the opener. Irving scored 24 of his 30 points in the first half to keep the Mavs within striking distance. Doncic filled the closer role, scoring 15 of his 33 in the fourth quarter and making a couple of clutch defensive stops.
  • Dave McMenamin: In what should be a long, competitive series, the Timberwolves already showed that failing to execute on the little things can make the difference. With 1:41 to go in Game 1, Towns was called for offensive goaltending; with 1:06 remaining, Mike Conley’s lob to Rudy Gobert was stolen by Doncic. Despite those critical miscues, the Wolves found a sliver of hope when, down by four points with less than two seconds remaining, Conley drew a 3-point shooting foul. To give Minnesota a chance, he had to make the first two free throws then purposely miss the third to allow for a tip-in opportunity. He missed the second, thwarting any chance at a long shot comeback. The Wolves were 11-for-18 from the line; the Mavs went 16-for-17.
  • Brian Windhorst: You could feel the big-game experience of Doncic and Irving as compared to Edwards and Towns, and that became a defining storyline in Dallas’ Game 1 win. Irving proved it early, keeping the Mavs on pace while Minnesota virtually couldn’t miss. Doncic, meanwhile, proved it late with a brilliant individual scoring effort.

What is one big adjustment we could see in Game 2?

  • MacMahon: The Mavs should adjust their tag-team centre rotation so that youngster Dereck Lively II gets more playing time. It’s tough to overlook the fact that the Mavs are minus-62 with Daniel Gafford in the starting lineup and plus-106 with Lively on the floor in the playoffs, but switching around the starting lineup would be too extreme at this stage, especially with a lead in the series.
  • McMenamin: After scoring 62 points in the opening two quarters, the Wolves slowed down in the second half, managing just 43 points. Towns and Edwards bemoaned Minnesota’s pitiful 12 fast-break points following the loss. After the Wolves made a basket, Edwards also chastised himself for allowing Irving to beat him down the court for a layup. In Game 2, Minnesota seems primed to accelerate the tempo.
  • Windhorst: The Mavs have announced their game plan: They will pack the paint and dare Minnesota to beat them with the outside shot. Dallas wants to put multiple bodies between Edwards, Towns and the rim. Edwards had to work extremely hard to create space for himself throughout Game 1, and Towns had no space when he was inside. In the first half, the Wolves were 11-of-25 on 3s. In the second half, Dallas’ strategy started to work, as Minnesota went 7-of-24 from deep, and Edwards and Towns were a combined 12-of-36 from the field. That is a winning formula.

Which role player will be the biggest X factor the rest of the series?

  • MacMahon: P.J. Washington, the Mavs’ surprise star of the second round. He struggled from 3-point range for most of the opener, but he hit a clutch corner 3 in Game 1. He also was the primary defender on Towns, who was 6-of-20 from the floor. If Towns can’t get in a groove, it will be tough for the Timberwolves to win this series.
  • McMenamin: Jaden McDaniels. It’s hard to ask for much more than what he gave in Game 1, especially through the first three quarters. Defensively, Doncic shot just 4-for-12 with McDaniels as the primary defender. Offensively, McDaniels scored 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting. But the fourth quarter was a different story: Doncic shot 4-for-7 against McDaniels, while McDaniels went 1-for-3 with two turnovers. Despite fading late, McDaniels should continue to have his fingerprints on both ends for the Wolves.
  • Windhorst: Mike Conley. Any lingering impacts following his Achilles tendon injury are hard to predict, but the Wolves badly needed offensive organization and his calming influence down the stretch. Conley’s presence wasn’t felt in crunch time of Game 1, a crucial pivot point for the Wolves moving forward.

Atalanta Win Europa League as Lookman Hat-Trick ends Leverkusen Unbeaten Run.

Nothing lasts forever—not even the Zhou dynasty, the Roman Empire, or Last of the Summer Wine—and neither did Bayer Leverkusen’s winning streak. Their quest for a perfect season ended at the penultimate hurdle after 51 games when Atalanta secured a shockingly comprehensive victory and their first title in 61 years thanks to an Ademola Lookman hat-trick, the first in a one-leg European final since Pierino Prati in 1969.

Despite much anticipation surrounding the rise of Xabi Alonso as one of Europe’s most talented young managers, an accomplished veteran emerged victorious. Gian Piero Gasperini, who has spent his entire career working extremely hard behind the scenes, is 66 years old when he receives his first piece of cutlery. It is a real moment of achievement. They defeated Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield and Marseille 3-0 in the semi-final first leg; no one can argue that these victories were undeserved.

“Being successful with Atalanta is one of those rare football fairytales that come true,” Gasperini remarked. “It allows for meritocracy because ideas still have room and don’t always need to be based on hard, cold cash.”

He made a point of talking about the terrible weeks in 2020 when the Covid panic decimated Bergamo. He declared, “We have brought a smile to the faces of the Bergamasco people, but we won’t be able to take away all that pain.”

That talk about Alonso was not wrong: winning the Bundesliga with any side other than Bayern Munich is a remarkable feat, and all the more so to do it the way he has, but here his side were rattled out of their stride by Atalanta’s organisation and the dynamism of Éderson and Teun Koopmeiners in particular.

“We were prepared for one-on-one duels all over the pitch but we weren’t able to impose ourselves,” Alonso said. “It’s painful but it’s deserved as well.” For once, the late surge didn’t deliver; at the last, Leverkusen ran out of comebacks.

There was a sense the Europa League was made for this: two teams who have had excellent seasons, both playing bright, vibrant football, given a stage on which to enjoy a grand European night. For the fans of both clubs, there was a palpable excitement just to be here; for them the experience of finals has not become a cloyingly familiar routine as it can seem to have become for fans of the giants.

Well, Leverkusen didn’t assist themselves as Atalanta played. They had an unusually nervous start, letting possession go too frequently, which let Atalanta establish a rhythm.

Lookman’s first came about as a result of an odd moment of inattention on the part of Exequiel Palacios, who hesitated as Davide Zappacosta crossed, seemingly oblivious to anyone following him. Lookman was able to steal ahead of him, and his last name acted as a warning to Palacios about what he ought to have been doing.

According to Gasperini, “nobody imagined he could make this much progress.” “In England, he wasn’t very prolific. I gave him a slightly more attacking role, and he’s had a fantastic season. He accomplished something tonight that will go down in football history.

Lookman spoke of the “calmness” of Bergamo and the “intensity” of Gasperini who, he said, had “simplified” the game for him to allow him to “look at my game in a different light and take it to a new level”.

The first goal stemmed from a blend of Leverkusen laxity and Lookman excellence and the second was similar as he gathered a loose ball, cut infield, nutmegged Granit Xhaka (who experienced his first defeat since Arsenal lost at Nottingham Forest a little over a year ago) and whipped a perfect finish inside the far post.

Given the run they are on, Leverkusen are not the sort of side to panic at being two behind. It was, after all, the fourth time it had happened in this Europa League campaign – and it was one fewer goal to pull back than Alonso had faced the first time he won a European competition. His equivalent of Didi Hamann, the substitute thrown on at half-time in Istanbul in 2005 to transform the game, was Victor Boniface.

But it made little difference. Leverkusen had plenty of the ball in the second half, but struggled to build real pressure. And then with 15 minutes remaining came the coup de grace. Gianluca Scamacca, in his ponderous way, led a break and shovelled a pass to Lookman, at which point the game abruptly sped up as he cut on to his left foot and smashed a triumphant finish into the top corner.

While they look to win their first championship in Eliminator 1 against the Rajasthan Royals at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru have taken the crowd by surprise by winning six straight games. The resurgent team has finally found their groove and is now unbeatable after eliminating the previous champion Chennai Super Kings and keeping them from finishing in the top 4.

However, RR has fallen short of them after dropping their latest game and losing four in a row. The team will rely on performances from its batting aces, Sanju Samson, Riyan Parag, and Dhruv Jurel, as they attempt to recapture their previous momentum.

1. Virat Kohli

2. Faf Du Plessis

RCB skipper Faf Du Plessis has kept the momentum high in the opening unit alongside Virat Kohli. The Protean cricketer has given a rock-solid start to the team while setting and chasing totals. Du Plessis has scored 421 runs from 14 matches at a strike rate of 163.81 which includes four fifties to his name.

Players who can make a difference

1. Yash Dayal

Yash Dayal has bowled comprehensively this season, leading as the highest wicket-taker for RCB. One of the most proficient players at the death, the left-arm pacer bowled the decisive last over against CSK in the last match which turned the fortunes of RCB as they qualified for the playoffs.

2. Dinesh Karthik

Veteran wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik’s contribution in the lower-middle order have been very crucial for the RCB. Karthik can shift the momentum rapidly down the order by providing 20-30 extra runs to the scoreline. In 14 matches, the RCB batter has scored 315 runs at a soaring strike rate of 195.65 with 2 fifties to his name.

Player Statistics (Rajasthan Royals)

1. Riyan Parag

Left-hand batter Riyan Parag has been impressive in the middle-order for the Royals. The young gun scored 531 runs from 14 matches with four fifties to his name and the highest score for him being an unbeaten 84.

2. Sanju Samson

Skipper Sanju Samson has kept the hopes alive for RR in crucial junctures of the match, even when the other players have faltered in the batting unit. Being the second highest run scorer in the team, Samson has scored 504 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 156.52 with 5 fifties to his name.

Players who can make a difference

1. Yuzvendra Chahal

RR’s spin wizard Yuzvendra Chahal has been the highest wicket-taker for the Royals so far. The Indian wrist spinner has picked timely wickets and stopped the flow of runs in the testing phases of the game. Chahal has picked 17 wickets from 13 matches at an economy of 9.38.

2. Sandeep Sharma

Medium-pacer Sandeep Sharma has been one of the trickiest players to deal with in the Royals line-up. The Indian bowler has played a vital role in restraining the run-flow in the middle and death overs. In 9 matches, Sandeep has picked 10 wickets at an excellent economy of 7.93.

Head-to-head

As the two teams contest for the 32nd time in the history of IPL, their head-to-head has been in favour of the Royal Challengers who won 15 meetings. The inaugural edition champions follow them with 13 wins with 4 matches ending in no result.

Pitch Report

The Narendra Modi Stadium has been a batting paradise that offers a lot of scoring opportunities for the batsmen. The due factor in the second innings acts as an icing on the cake for the team batting second. And evidently so, out of the 33 matches played here at this venue, 18 matches have been won by teams batting second. Thus, the teams winning the toss must bowl first at this venue and restrict the team to a chasable total.

Match Prediction

As resurgent RCB come from six consecutive wins, the momentum will be convincingly in their favour against a struggling RR who have lost four consecutive encounters. With Virat Kohli and co. looking in fiery hot form, the RCB stand as the favourites to win the clash. As per the Google Win Predictor, Bangalore have a 55% chance of winning the match against the former champions.

Anthony Edwards Subtly makes Fun of Karl-Anthony Towns’ Infamous “After All That” Saying During Press Conference.

Anthony Edwards jested on his teammate Karl-Anthony Towns during the post-game interview after the Timberwolves clinched the Western Conference semifinal series against the Denver Nuggets. Edwards
subtly made fun of Towns’ infamous “after all that” saying by humorously repeating the line after Towns said it during the interview.
Edwards repeating his teammate was likely a throwback to Towns’ viral moment of him saying “after all that” in a different voice over a year ago during an unofficial interview.

Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards combined for 39 points as the Timberwolves defeated the reigning champions 98-90 in Game 7 to advance to the Western Conference finals. Towns led the team’s winning effort, registering 23 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
The Timberwolves’ stunning comeback from a 15-point hole at halftime set an NBA playoff record for the biggest turnaround in Game 7. Edwards was instrumental in the comeback, starting with four points and three assists at halftime before finishing with 16 points, eight
rebounds, seven assists and two steals.

“Man, f**k them 9 years”: Anthony Edwards hilariously interrupts Karl-Anthony Towns during career reflection

Before the current season, the Minnesota Timberwolves were unable to win a single playoff series since 2004. The team missed the postseason for 14 consecutive years since then before ending their drought in 2018.
Drafted first overall by the Timberwolves in 2015, Karl-Anthony Towns experienced the organization’s struggles firsthand. The four-time NBA All-Star missed the playoffs in five of his first six years in the league and only won his first playoff series in his ninth year.
Towns reflected upon his nine-year Timberwolves tenure during the post-game interview after clinching the series against the Nuggets on Sunday.

Edwards was drafted first overall by the Timberwolves in 2020. The 22- year-old led the team to the playoffs for three straight seasons and
has established himself as one of the league’s premier young stars.
Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards will look to make a deeper playoff run as the Minnesota Timberwolves face the Dallas Mavericks next for the Western Conference finals.

IPL 2024 Playoffs: KKR vs SRH in Qualifier 1, RCB-RR clash in Eliminator.

Can KKR vs SRH keep the flavour of their season without Salt? How much of a loss Buttler will be to RR? Is this the RCB’s year at last?

The IPL 2024 playoffs are almost here. Which Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) or Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team would finish the KKR vs SRH playoff lineup was decided in a thrilling match on Saturday. It wasn’t until the very last league game, a washout in Guwahati last night, that we found out who would play who, but we now know. Additionally, none of the top four seeds from 2023 make the cut, making this a totally different playoff lineup than it was the previous year.

Qualifier 1: KKR vs SRH, May 21, Ahmedabad

For the first time, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have concluded the league phase as the top team heading into the first qualifying round. Despite losing their last two games, they ended up with three more points than any other team. Will they be rusted or renewed? If SRH is any indication, taking a vacation from cricket can be beneficial. They returned after a 10-day break, which they attributed to both the weather and the schedule, and they successfully chased 215 against Punjab Kings on Sunday. In IPL 2024, this was SRH’s only other victory in a game they chased.

  • Previous meeting: They’ve played each other only once this season, both team’s first game of IPL 2024. It was a high-scoring thriller that ended in a last-ball four-run win for KKR at Eden Gardens.
  • Player availability: The England players who will be going to the upcoming T20 World Cup have withdrawn early from the IPL, and among them is one of KKR’s lynchpins this season: Sunil Narine’s big-hitting opening partner, Phil Salt.
  • Weather forecast: “Very hot with plenty of sunshine” – that’s the forecast for Ahmedabad on May 21, and the heat will hardly relent as the lights come on for the evening match: it’s a minimum of 31C on the day. The forecast says there’s a 0% chance of rain.

Eliminator: RR vs RCB, May 22, Ahmedabad

RR had won seven of their opening eight games, and on April 22 they were flying high at the top of the table. Conversely, RCB was struggling at the other end of the table, having lost as many games as RR had won, including six straight losses. When we fast-forward to May 20, we see an astounding turnaround: prior to Sunday’s washout, RR had won one out of the previous six games and lost four. With six straight victories under their belt, RCB enters this knockout match with the upper hand.

  • Previous meeting: They’ve played each other once this year, a convincing win for RR in Jaipur, where Virat Kohli hit a century only to be outdone by Jos Buttler.
  • Player availability: This time, RR will be without Buttler, who’s part of the English T20 World Cup contingent that’s left the tournament. RCB will be without Will Jacks and Reece Topley for the same reasons.
  • Weather forecast: The forecast doesn’t change much from Qualifier 1. Ahmedabad should remain hot and dry for the Eliminator.
KKR vs SRH

Qualifier 2: Loser of Qualifier 1 vs Winner of the Eliminator, May 24, Chennai

  • Weather forecast: Some clouds are forecast during the day, but only a 5% chance of rain. A low of 29C, so another hot, sweaty evening in store for the players.

Final: Winner of Qualifier 1 vs Winner of Qualifier 2, May 26, Chennai

There’s a possibility of a first-time winner: RCB, ending a 16-year drought in the same season that their women’s team knocked off the Women’s Premier League title in its second edition.

KKR vs SRH

Or RR could win their first title since the inaugural season when Shane Warne’s relatively unfancied team saw off MS Dhoni’s Super Kings in the final.

For KKR it would be a first title since 2014, and their third overall. Quite the homecoming for Gautam Gambhir, that would be – he had captained KKR to both their previous titles, and played for them till 2017. This season, he shifted from Lucknow Super Giants back to KKR as team mentor.

SRH’s only title (not to confuse them with the other franchise from Hyderabad, Deccan Chargers, who won it in 2009) came in 2016 – can they add to that?

  • Weather forecast: Not much change from Qualifier 2, but slightly hotter even (min. 30 C) and even less chance of rain (4%).

‘Apni Aukaat Mat Bhulo’: Social Media Slams ‘Classless’ RCB Players for Neglecting CSK’s MS Dhoni After Playoff Decider Clash.

Fans and followers alike referred to RCB’s post-match celebration and their failure to give MS Dhoni a handshake as “classless” and “over the top” on social media, which sparked a discussion over the true spirit of the game.

A apparently insurmountable task presented as simple. Last night, Royal Challengers Bengaluru shocked everyone by winning six straight games and securing the final playoff berth, a point ahead of CSK, whom they routed by 27 runs in the Chinnaswamy on Saturday.

The RCB players came to the pitch in wild celebration to commemorate their stunning playoff qualification. Reaching a goal of this magnitude demands joy as well.

But as usual, there is more scrutiny when there are greater stakes. The “classless” and “prideful” celebration style that the Bengaluru team adopted following their victory over CSK has also gained popularity recently.

Fan footage from the Chinnaswamy last night following RCB’s triumph has surfaced on X. In it, the home team is shown celebrating by charging to the middle of the crease while the losers, CSK, are seen line up in order to shake hands with their opponents, with talisman MS Dhoni leading the pack.

Fans and followers alike referred to RCB’s post-match celebration and their failure to give MS Dhoni a handshake as “classless” and “over the top” on social media, which sparked a discussion over the true spirit of the game.

Also Read IPL 2024 RCB vs CSK Highlights: Royal Challengers Bengaluru Wins by 27 Runs, Qualifies for Playoffs; Chennai Eliminated.

But, as a counter, many other users have also raised the question to MS Dhoni’s reaction, who is seen promptly walking away before shaking the players’ hands, who were in the middle of the crease.

Others pointed out Dhoni’s reaction as ‘arrogant’, stating that the CSK man could have indulged in some patience had he looked to address his rivals.

No matter what the case may be, one thing is for certain. RCB pulled off one of the biggest comebacks in IPL history, after clinching only one win in their first 8 games to securing playoff qualification. And that is surely something that calls for celebration.

La Liga: Villareal and Real Madrid Play to a Thrilling 4–4 Draw, While Barcelona Defeats Rayo to Take Second Place.

Barcelona took the lead in the third minute when Lamine Yamal cut in from the right wing and chipped the ball to Lewandowski, La Liga who expertly controlled the pass with his chest and volleyed home.

In their final home game of the season, Barcelona defeated Rayo Vallecano 3-0. Thanks to goals from Pedri and Robert Lewandowski early in the game, they were able to earn second place in La Liga.

The result moved Barcelona to 82 points, four points above Girona, who won 3-1 away at Valencia. Champions Real Madrid are 12 points above Barcelona with one more round of games left.

Barcelona took the lead in the third minute when Lamine Yamal cut in from the right wing and chipped the ball to Lewandowski, who expertly controlled the pass with his chest and volleyed home.

Although Rayo had their chances to level, Barcelona doubled their lead with some magical footwork from Joao Felix who saw his shot saved but Pedri managed to score from the rebound to give the home side a two-goal cushion.

Barely three minutes later, Pedri spotted a gap in Rayo’s high defensive line and he was put through on goal with a long ball from centre back Ronald Araujo, allowing the 21-year-old to fire home and double his goal tally for the season.

Barcelona will finish their season away at Sevilla next weekend while Rayo, who are 16th, host Athletic Bilbao.

Garcia brace helps Osasuna win 4-1 at Atletico

Raul Garcia scored in each half as Osasuna secured their first win at Atletico Madrid since 2009, beating the hosts 4-1 in LaLiga on Sunday and handing them their second home loss of the league campaign.

The visitors scored in the 26th minute when Alejandro Catena headed it down inside the box for Garcia to score. Osasuna doubled their lead in the 52nd minute with Atletico keeper Jan Oblak’s block falling to substitute Aimar Oroz for a close-range finish.

Atletico struck back three minutes later with Alvaro Morata scoring off Angel Correa’s cross from the left. But Garcia restored Osasuna’s two-goal cushion in the 64th minute, before Lucas Torro sealed the victory, hammering home with his right foot in the 88th.

Osasuna’s first win in seven matches lifted them to 11th place in the league with 44 points from 37 matches. Atletico, who have 73 points, will finish fourth after falling five points behind third-placed Girona.

Villarreal’s Sorloth scores four in thrilling 4-4 draw with Real Madrid

Villarreal forward Alexander Sorloth struck four times in 17 minutes to help his side fight back and snatch a 4-4 home draw against champions Real Madrid on Sunday as the Norway international became LaLiga’s top scorer.

Real opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Turkish youngster Arda Guler slotted home a low strike off a Brahim Diaz pass before Joselu doubled the lead with a close-range header on the half-hour mark.

Sorloth pulled one back for Villarreal with a towering header in the 39th minute, but Lucas Vazquez restored Real’s two-goal advantage only a minute later before Guler made it 4-1 in the final seconds of the first half.

But the hosts rallied after the break, with Sorloth scoring three goals in eight minutes, between the 48th and 56th, as he reached 23 league goals this season.

In a thrilling encounter, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) emerged victorious over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 27 runs, securing their place in the playoffs of IPL 2024. Rachin Ravindra’s explosive 61 off 37 balls and Faf du Plessis’s solid 54 off 39 balls laid a strong foundation for RCB. On the bowling front, Shardul Thakur and Yash Dayal delivered crucial spells, each taking two wickets, helping RCB to restrict CSK effectively.

Despite a valiant effort, CSK couldn’t chase down the target, leading to their elimination from the tournament. This win not only bolsters RCB’s confidence as they head into the playoffs but also marks a disappointing end to CSK’s campaign. RCB’s all-round performance highlights their potential as strong contenders for the title this season.

Sunil Chhetri, Indian Football Team Captain, Announces Retirement; World Cup Qualifier Against Kuwait to be his Swansong.

The top goal scorer for India, Sunil Chhetri, has declared his retirement from international football.

The most decorated football player in India, Sunil Chhetri, has declared his retirement from international competition. The 39-year-old Chhetri announced in a video posted on the social networking site X that the forthcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifier between India and Kuwait in Kolkata on June 6 will be his final match.

“The recollection of the last 19 years is a combination of duty, pressure and immense joy. I never thought that these are the many games I would play for the country, good or bad but now I did but these last one and half two months I did. And this (the feeling) was very strange. I was probably going towards the decision that this game (against Kuwait) is going to be my last,” Chhetri said.

Sunil Chhetri, a name synonymous with Indian football, boasts a glittering career spanning over two decades. This gifted forward has not only dominated domestic leagues but also carved his name on the international stage. Call it coincidences or a twist of fate, Chhetri will play his final game in the city where he made his India debut 19 years ago. India’s game against Kuwait is a must-win to stay in contention for a World Cup Qualifiers Round 3 berth. Currently ranked second in Group A with four points from four games, India travel to face Qatar in their final group stage match. Only the top two teams progress.

“There is one day that I never forget and remember it quite often is the first time I played for my country man, it was unbelievable. But the day before, morning of the day, Sukhi sir, my first national team coach, in the morning he came to me and he’s like, you’re going to start? I can’t tell you how I was feeling man. I took my jersey, I sprayed some perfume on it, I have no idea why. So that day, everything that happened, once he told me, from breakfast to lunch and to the game and to my first goal in my debut, to conceding late 80th minute, that day is probably that I will never forget and is one of the best days of my national team journey,” Chhetri added.

“And the moment I told myself first, that yes, this is the game that is going to be my last, is when I started recollecting everything. It was so strange, I started thinking about this game, that game, this coach, that coach, that team, that member, that ground, that away match, this good game, that bad game, all my individual performances, everything came, all the flashes came. So I decided that this is it.”

Watch Sunil Chhetri’s retirement speech below:

Chhetri’s journey began in 2002 with Mohun Bagan. His talent soon propelled him abroad, with stints at the USA’s Kansas City Wizards (2010) and Portugal’s Sporting CP reserves (2012). Back in India, he donned the jerseys of prestigious clubs like East Bengal, Dempo, Mumbai City FC, and currently, Bengaluru FC. It’s with Bengaluru that Chhetri truly flourished, lifting trophies like the I-League (2014, 2016), ISL (2019), and Super Cup (2018). He even led them to the AFC Cup final in 2016.

Chhetri, the goal-scoring machine

While club success is impressive, Sunil Chhetri’s true magic lies in his international exploits. He has been instrumental in India’s victories in the Nehru Cup (2007, 2009, 2012) and the SAFF Championship (2011, 2015, 2021). Most significantly, his contribution to India’s 2008 AFC Challenge Cup win secured their first AFC Asian Cup appearance in 27 years.

But it’s his goalscoring prowess that sets Chhetri apart. Since his debut goal in 2002, he has amassed a staggering tally. With 94 goals in 150 international appearances, he sits comfortably as the third-highest active international goal-scorer, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Argentina’s Lionel Messi. This achievement places him fourth on the all-time list.

Chhetri’s international debut came in 2005, followed by his first goal against Pakistan. A defining moment arrived in the 2011 SAFF Championship, where he surpassed Indian legend I.M. Vijayan’s record of six goals in a single edition by scoring a phenomenal seven, propelling India to victory and becoming the national team’s highest scorer.

Across club and country, Chhetri’s goal tally stands at a remarkable 252 in 515 appearances, averaging almost a goal every two games. This consistency and talent haven’t gone unnoticed. In 2022, FIFA honoured him with a documentary titled “Captain Fantastic,” celebrating his journey and achievements.
