Sushil Kumar Modi, Bihar Former Deputy Chief Minister, Passes Away at 72

Reacting to Sushil Modi’s Modi, 72, was suffering from cancer, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and others expressed their deep grief

On Monday, Sushil Modi, the former Bihar deputy chief minister, passed away from renal cancer. He was seventy-two years old.

The All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) has confirmed that the BJP leader departed around 9:45 p.m.

In April, Modi said that he was sick and requested that the party relieve him of any duties related to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“I have been battling with cancer for the last six months,” he had stated in a message on the social media platform X, written in Hindi. I believe the timing is right to release it to the public. During the Lok Sabha elections, I would be unable to complete my duties. I’ve informed the PM about this. My appreciation to my party, Bihar, and the nation.”

“Heartfelt tribute to our dear friend, former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and former Rajya Sabha MP Shri Sushil Kumar Modi ji on his demise,” former chief minister of Bihar Jitan Ram Manjhi said on social networking site X, expressing his condolences for Modi’s passing.

Modi had served as Bihar Deputy Chief Minister for over 11 years across two stints — the first from November 2005 to June 2013, and then from July 2017 to December 2020 — stitching up a formidable combination with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of the JD(U).

In his three-decade career, he was also an MLA, an MLC, a member of the Lok Sabha, and a Rajya Sabha MP. He emerged from the 1974 JP Movement, along with the likes of Lalu and Nitish, and was known to be the most influential BJP leader since Bihar BJP’s founder Kailashpati Mishra.
