What Was Involved With Elon Musk Trip to China? Tesla Is The Focus on Complete Self-Driving?

Elon Musk Tesla vehicles have met all of China’s privacy and data security regulations. Due to the problem of data collection, the Chinese government and military locations had already banned Tesla automobiles.

Elon Musk was granted permission to introduce Full Self-Driving (FSD) in Beijing following his unexpected visit to China on April 28, following the cancellation of his much-anticipated trip to India due to “very heavy Tesla obligations.”

Musk was supposed to meet with the founders of an Indian space startup as well as Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A $2–3 billion electric vehicle (EV) facility for India was anticipated to be announced by the CEO of Tesla along with some Starlink-related news during his visit.

But Musk promised to introduce the FSD in the largest vehicle market in the world Elon Musk when he met with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang on Sunday.

WHAT WAS DISCUSSED IN CHINA?

The Wall Street Journal reported that Beijing gave preliminary approval to Tesla to launch FSD in China. Tesla’s cars made in China passed key data security and privacy requirements in China. Previously, Tesla vehicles had faced bans from Chinese military installations and government sites over the issue of data collection.

This has given a much-needed boost to Elon Musk Tesla, which is struggling with slow EV demand in the US and FSD-related apprehensions in its home market. Tesla is also grappling with low sales in China where homegrown car manufacturers are providing competition to Musk’s company.

The Chinese state broadcaster also reported that Tesla is likely to continue teaming up with tech company Baidu, which licenses mapping data and its lane-level navigation service for FSD. Tesla has been using Baidu for in-car mapping and navigation since 2020.

Reuters also reported a prominent Chinese automotive association confirmed on Sunday that Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y vehicles were among the models subjected to testing and deemed compliant with China’s data security standards.

On Tesla’s April 23 earnings call, Musk said the EV major aims Elon Musk to release FSD “as a supervised autonomy system in any market that — where we can get regulatory approval for that, which we think includes China.”

Tesla has sold more than 1.7 million cars in China since it entered the market a decade ago and its Shanghai factory is its largest globally.

ROADBLOCKS BETWEEN CHINA AND TESLA

China is Tesla’s second biggest market after the US. Since 2021, Chinese officials have required Tesla to keep all data that its cars collect in China stored in Shanghai. This means Tesla cannot send the data back to the US.

Data security and compliance were the biggest reasons why the US electric car company did not roll out the FSD in China yet despite launching its most advanced autopilot software four years ago.

Also, Chinese new energy car manufacturers such as BYD, Lotus, Nezha, Li Auto, and Nio have already met the country’s stringent data security policy, which posed tough competition to Tesla.

Tesla’s global vehicle deliveries experienced a decline in the first quarter, marking the first decrease in nearly four years.

According to a New York Times report, “Musk’s fortune is tied to Tesla’s Shanghai factory. The Shanghai factory has replaced Tesla’s plant in Fremont, California, as its largest and most productive, accounting for over half of the company’s global deliveries and the bulk of its profits”.

Meanwhile, a Wall Street Journal report said, “Musk’s response to the pressure has been to become a high-profile cheerleader of China’s ruling Communist Party, in sharp contrast to his renegade persona in the US, where he has clashed with the Securities and Exchange Commission and mocked President Biden in tweets, once calling him a labor union sock puppet”.

WHAT IS FSD TECHNOLOGY?

FSD is the most autonomous version of Autopilot software and was rolled out in 2020. Its features include self-parking, auto lane changes, and traffic navigation. But Tesla says FSD or Autopilot does not make its vehicles autonomous and they require active driver supervision.

Each Tesla vehicle is equipped with multiple external cameras and vision processing software, which the company uses to deliver Autopilot features – an advanced driver assistance system or ADAS.

Autopilot includes what Tesla calls ‘Traffic-Aware Cruise Control’, which matches the speed of the vehicle to that of the surrounding traffic, and ‘Autosteer’, a function that assists in steering within a marked lane, and uses traffic-aware cruise control. FSD, however, is a further upgrade to Autopilot that was launched in 2020 and aims at a driving experience involving minimal driver intervention.

In 2023, Musk said the price of FSD, then at $15,000, was very low, saying the value of the car would increase dramatically if it became autonomous. Last month, Tesla slashed the price of FSD to $8,000 from $12,000 in the US.

DISADVANTAGES OF FSD

Problems range from jumping red lights, and not recognizing pedestrians to situational problems like identifying a cyclist who briefly disappears behind a parked vehicle. Tesla began beta testing its full self-driving system only in 2020.

Google’s Waymo and Cruise owned by General Motors are among companies that predicted full self-driving cars by 2020, with only limited success: that too limited to ring-fenced, geotagged areas.

Tesla relies primarily on car cameras, while humans make predictions based on road situations, which can present a complex problem for computers, such as when someone at the side of the road steps off the pavement and disappears behind a parked bus for a minute or distinguishing between a red signage on a wall versus an actual stop sign, as mentioned in The Indian Express.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration had said it was opening a new probe of Tesla self-driving systems amid concerns that a move last year to improve driver monitoring and attention was not up to the mark.

Why does Tesla value China more than India?

China is well ahead of India in the production of EVs and batteries, and it is a major growth driver for Tesla, the most valued electric vehicle manufacturer in the world. However, India still has opportunities.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, arrived in Beijing a week after canceling his highly anticipated trip to India, highlighting the significance of China in the global supply chain for the most valuable electric vehicle manufacturer in the world. Musk was there to promote Full Self-Driving (FSD).

This is the reason why China continues to be far more significant to Tesla than India.

China’s dominance in battery production

China accounts for over half of the global electric vehicle (EV) sales, largely driven by its near dominance in battery production — a critical element for EV manufacturing. Elon Musk’s recent China visit saw him meet Robin Zeng, the chairman of Chinese battery giant China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Limited (CATL), Reuters reported. CATL accounts for two-thirds of global battery production and is a supplier for Tesla, as well as other major automakers such as Volkswagen AG and Toyota Motor Corp.

Tesla’s biggest plant is in Shanghai

When it comes to EV production, China has left the US and Europe way behind and is now a key engine of growth for Tesla. The EV major opened its biggest manufacturing unit in Shanghai in 2018 after a new Chinese policy allowed foreign carmakers to establish fully-owned subsidiaries in the country. The Shanghai plant alone produces over 1 million units of Tesla’s most successful Model 3 and Model Y cars a year. The gigafactory, the first outside the US, is also crucial for Tesla as it supplies its cars to New Zealand, Australia, and Europe.

India’s EV push is still at a nascent stage

A global shift from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to EVs presents a massive opportunity for new entrants like India, vying to be a part of the global supply chain. However, India has historically relied on imports of batteries from elsewhere and currently has a fragmented EV supply chain.

According to a Niti Ayog report, the biggest demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) comes from consumer electronics such as laptops, mobile phones, and tablets. The LIB market through EV sales in India was only about 1 GWh (compared to 4.5 GWh for consumer electronics). Taking note of the booming demand for batteries, India is pushing for battery production through the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for advanced chemistry cell (ACC) battery storage. ACC is a crucial component of lithium-ion batteries. Niti Ayog says that India is well-positioned to capture a large share of the growing global market and could represent up to 13% of global battery demand by 2030.

Regulatory flip-flops on India’s EV policy

India’s EV policy was released last month after years of flip-flops. In 2018, the then Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said that there was no need for an electric vehicle policy and that technology should not be trapped by rules and regulations. In 2018-19, the Centre increased customs duty on CKD (completely knocked down) imports of motor vehicles, motor cars, and motorcycles from 10% to 15%, much to the ire of global automakers. Last month when India finally released its EV policy, it eased duty on completely built-up (CBU) cars with a minimum investment limit for manufacturers of Rs 4,150 crore.

But, there is still opportunity for India

Despite China’s dominance over the EV supply chain, its exports are increasingly coming under scrutiny in Europe and the US, presenting an opportunity for India.

The European Commission in October last year launched an anti-subsidy investigation into the imports of battery electric vehicles (BEV) from China. As per the EC, the investigation will first determine whether BEV value chains in China benefit from illegal subsidization and whether this subsidization causes or threatens to cause economic injury to EV manufacturers in the EU. “Based on the investigation’s findings, the Commission will establish whether it is in the EU’s interest to remedy the effects of the unfair trade practices found by imposing anti-subsidy duties on imports of battery electric vehicles from China,” the EC said.

Why Elon Musk decided to postpone his trip to India: “Really heavy…”

During his visit to India, Elon Musk was supposed to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

One of the richest persons in the world and CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, has rescheduled his much-anticipated trip to India. During his tour, the CEO and creator of SpaceX was supposed to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The billionaire attributed his choice to his “very heavy Tesla obligations.”

Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla Motors) Biography

“Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year,” Elon Musk posted to X.

Elon Musk, who also controls X (previously Twitter), verified this week that he will be meeting with Prime Minister Modi in India.

“Looking forward to meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India,” he wrote in a post on X.

It was anticipated that Elon Musk would declare a $2–3 billion investment to establish manufacturing in India.

Vineeta Singh eliminates the misunderstanding that there is a difference between a person’s job and biological clocks: “There is no…”

During PM Modi’s June 2018 visit to the US, Elon Musk had a meeting with the latter. The CEO of Tesla talked about PM Modi, his intended travel to India in 2024, and Tesla’s strategy to join the Indian market and establish the eagerly awaited factory.

The announcement of Elon Musk’s visit to India had come months after the central government announced a new electric vehicle policy, which offered import duty concessions to those setting up manufacturing units in India with a minimum investment of 500 million dollars.

It was expected that the Tesla founder’s visit would also provide a fillip to his other ambitious project in India – Starlink. Bloomberg had quoted “people familiar with the matter” as saying that Starlink had received assurances from the central government that it would be able to start operating in the country as soon as the third quarter of this year.

Experts have claimed that the operations of Starlink in India would mark a further deepening of the security partnership between India and the US.

Xiaomi: The Chinese smartphone giant taking on Tesla!

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has launched its first electric vehicle (EV) and will begin taking orders.

Its chief executive Lei Jun said this week that the Speed Ultra 7 (SU7) would be priced below 500,000 yuan ($69,186; £54,836).

The move sees the technology giant taking on rivals like Tesla and BYD.

Xiaomi’s entry into the electric car market comes as sales growth has slowed globally, triggering a price war.

The firm is hoping that the SU7’s shared operating system with its phones, laptops and other devices will appeal to existing customers.

Xiaomi is the third-largest seller of smartphones worldwide with a market share of about 12%, according to research firm Counterpoint.

The SU7, which Xiaomi has been teasing since last year, has drawn comparisons to Porsche’s Taycan and Panamera sports car models.

It will be made by a unit of state-owned car manufacturer BAIC Group at a plant in Beijing that can produce as many as 200,000 vehicles a year.

“While getting this far is itself quite an achievement, the ultimate achievement would be to demonstrate that there is a consumer market for Xiaomi as a smart EVs brand,” Bill Russo of Automobility told the BBC.

In an indication of the challenges facing technology firms who want to make electric cars, iPhone maker Apple last month reportedly cancelled its plans to build an EV.

Mr Russo added that Xiaomi’s entry into the car market reflects its confidence “in the relevancy for their brand” in China while Apple did not see enough potential in the EV market outside of China.

Xiaomi has said it will invest $10bn (£7.9bn) in its vehicles business over the next 10 years.

“The Chinese EV market is very mature and creates a very stable ecosystem for the EV manufacturers,” said Abhishek Murali from research firm Rystad Energy.

“For example, the battery supply chain is very strong, and the charging network in the country is also growing to meet the growing EV feed.”

The launch of Xiaomi’s first car comes as a price war in China’s EV market has been intensifying.

Tesla, which is headed by multi-billionaire Elon Musk, has cut the cost of its cars in China by thousands of dollars in recent months as local rivals like the world’s top-selling EV maker BYD have slashed prices.

The world’s biggest car market is already crowded so Xiaomi is one of the few new prospective entrants to gain approval from authorities as officials try to curb a flood of new players.

Earlier this week, BYD posted record annual profits but said growth had slowed towards the end of last year.

Shanghai-based electric car maker Nio on Wednesday lowered its forecast for first quarter deliveries as consumers tightened spending as China’s economic growth weakens.

American EV giant Tesla is due to announce its delivery numbers for the first three months of 2024 next week.

At the same time, governments around the world are pushing back against imports of foreign-made EVs.

On Tuesday, Beijing initiated dispute settlement proceedings against the US at the World Trade Organization to contest “discriminatory subsidies” under the US Inflation Reduction Act.

Meanwhile, the European Union has launched an investigation into whether Chinese government subsidies have helped the country’s electric car makers undercut European-made models.

Tesla Germany halts work as Elon Musk calls suspected arson ‘extremely dumb’

Tesla’s European Gigafactory near Berlin has halted work until further notice after what CEO Elon Musk called an “extremely dumb” suspected arson attack nearby left it without power.

Tesla’s European Gigafactory near Berlin has halted work until further notice after what CEO Elon Musk called an “extremely dumb” suspected arson attack nearby left it without power on Tuesday.

The attack southeast of the German capital set an electricity pylon close to the site ablaze, but the fire did not spread to the Tesla facility – the US electric vehicle maker’s first manufacturing plant in Europe.

It has, however, shuttered production at least until early next week, the company said.

The outage will cost Tesla estimated losses in the high hundreds of millions of euros, with 1,000 vehicles left unfinished on Tuesday alone.

A company official was noncommittal on whether this would affect plans to double capacity at the site, but condemned what he saw as negative sentiment towards it.

Emergency services have extinguished the blaze, and power to the surrounding communities has mostly been restored.

Joerg Steinbach, the economy minister of Brandenburg, the German state where Tesla’s plant is based, condemned the suspected attack as having “terrorist markings”, and hitting tens of thousands of people.

“This includes hospitals, homes for the elderly, where people may also be dependent on oxygen supply or similar, which is electricity-based,” he said at a briefing outside the factory.

The Tesla site, which employs around 12,500 people, was evacuated and most employees sent home. Tesla shares were down 3% at 1522 GMT.

Local media published a letter purportedly from a far-left activist organisation called the Volcano Group that claimed responsibility for the incident, in a 2,500-word attack on Tesla and its billionaire CEO Musk.

Police said they were aware of the letter, which was signed “Agua De Pau”, the name of a volcanic mountain in the Azores, and said they were checking its authenticity.

“These are either the dumbest eco-terrorists on Earth or they’re puppets of those who don’t have good environmental goals,” Musk said on X.

“Stopping production of electric vehicles, rather than fossil fuel vehicles, ist extrem dumm,” he said, using the German for “extremely dumb”.

The attack was the latest setback for Tesla, which has had a bumpy ride in Europe of late, facing union pressure for collective bargaining agreements in the Nordics and supply disruptions as a result of attacks on shipping in the Red Sea.

Germany has championed new big-ticket foreign investments at a time when Europe’s largest economy is facing recession and grappling with higher inflation and weaker foreign demand.

“If a left-wing extremist motive is confirmed, then this is further evidence that the left-wing extremist scene does not shy away from attacks on critical energy infrastructure,” Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said.

“The consequences can affect thousands of completely uninvolved people, as they do today. This shows enormous criminal energy.”

‘WE SABOTAGED TESLA’

Police are investigating the possible arson attack in the area around the plant, which has been the focus of environmental protests since it was launched by Musk two years ago.

“We are shocked by what happened today. It’s the second direct attack on power supply to the factory and there was a third attack on the railway nearby. We are very concerned,” said plant head Andre Thierig.

He said the factory had managed to safely conduct an emergency shutdown, involving decanting molten aluminium from its smelters before it solidified.

Brandenburg state has documented previous arson attacks by far-left activists, including at a Tesla power supply site at Gruenheide in May 2021.

“We sabotaged Tesla,” read the letter about Tuesday’s incident, posted on website kontrapolis.info, describing the attack as a gift marking International Women’s Day on March 8.

“Tesla consumes earth, resources, people, workers, and in return spits out 6,000 SUVs, killer cars and monster trucks each week.”

Tesla’s ambitions to expand its plant, which has a capacity to produce around 500,000 cars a year, hit a roadblock when local residents voted down a motion to fell trees to enlarge it.

The U.S. EV maker wants to double the site’s capacity to 100 gigawatt hours of battery production and 1 million cars per year, setting it up to dominate the European market.

The plant’s output ramp-up has slowed, though the carmaker produced 6,000 cars in a week for the first time in January.

Steinbach said his government would reassess the current situation with regards to climate activists occupying the forest near the Tesla plant.

The initiative, named “Tesla Stoppen”, had struck a deal with the local government which assured them they would able to stay in the forest until mid-March on condition that they did not make fires or leave behind garbage, German media reported.

Between 80 and 100 people were currently taking part in the action, a spokesperson for the protesters said, adding that they planned to stay there for several weeks.
