Delhi Farmers Protest News Live: The Center’s recommendation that the government purchase cotton, maize, and pulses at MSP was turned down by the movement’s leaders

After failing to reach an agreement with the government over their demands for higher crop prices, thousands of farmers on tractors set to restart their push towards New Delhi on Wednesday were met by tear gas shells. Police have kept a miles-long column of farmers atop agricultural machinery at bay since last week.

In order to expand the government programme that currently covers basics like rice and wheat, farm unions are calling for legislation that would establish a minimum price for all commodities.

Opposition leaders criticized the Centre for the death of a youth at the Khanauri Border crossing in Sangrur district, Punjab, during the ongoing farmers’ protests.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann said that he was saddened by the death of a young farmer on the Punjab-Haryana border and asserted that stringent action would be taken against those responsible for it.

“The news of the death of 21-year-old Shubhakaran was received today during the incident at Khanuri border. It is very sad that the youth of my state is no longer in this world. I want to ask the central government why the farmer of Punjab cannot go to the capital of his own country? We express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of Shubhakaran in this hour of sorrow. We assure to help the family financially and socially in all aspects. After the post-mortem, appropriate action will be taken against the responsible officials,” he said.

Opposition protesters pelted Albania’s government building with petrol bombs and rocks late on Tuesday, accusing state officials of involvement in organised crime and corruption after their leader was placed under house arrest.

Thousands gathered in front of the government headquarters in the capital Tirana as riot police officers were called in to cordon off the office of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, serious damage or arrests.

The main opposition Democratic Party accuses Rama of nepotism and corruption, which it says are prompting many young people to emigrate for a better life in Western Europe.

Protesters chose Tuesday for the rally in remembrance of February 20, 1991, when pro-democracy demonstrators tore down the statue of Albania’s longtime communist dictator Enver Hoxha.

“Today we are here to bring down Rama’s regime, which is worse than Enver Hoxha’s regime,” said Syle Xhebexhia, who said he travelled over 100 km to attend the protest in Tirana.

Opposition leader Sali Berisha addressed the protesters via a video link from house arrest. He is being investigated for alleged corruption while Prime Minister between 2005-2013.

Berisha has denied wrongdoing, accusing Rama of a political vendetta meant to silence opponents. Rama denies this.

Prosecutors have yet to decide whether to file formal charges against Berisha or drop them.

“Edi Rama, similar to the other dictator (Hoxha), has concentrated all powers in his hands and wants an Albania without opposition,” Berisha told the protesting crowd.

Iconic radio host Ameen Sayani has died at the age of 91, his family said on Wednesday. He passed away in the hospital due to heart failure.

Iconic radio host Ameen Sayani has died at the age of 91 after suffering a heart attack, his son Rajil Sayani said on Wednesday.

Rajil Sayani stated that his father was rushed to the HN Reliance Hospital in Mumbai but couldn’t be saved. The funeral will be held on Thursday, he added.

Born on December 21, 1932 in Mumbai, Ameen Sayani was a household name for generations, captivating audiences with his melodious voice and engaging style. He began his career as an English-language broadcaster, and transitioned to Hindi after India’s independence.

Sayani achieved immense popularity through his radio program ‘Geetmala’, which played a pivotal role in popularising radio listening in India.

Geetmala, hosted by Sayani, became a national phenomenon, showcasing popular Hindi film music and captivating listeners for decades. His signature way of addressing listeners as “Behno aur Bhaiyo” (sisters and brothers) became instantly recognisable and widely imitated.

Sayani’s career spanned over six decades, producing and presenting over 54,000 radio programs and 19,000 voice-overs for advertisements and jingles.

He also dabbled in acting, appearing in various films in small roles, often portraying an announcer.

In a condolence message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Sayani’s “golden voice on the airwaves had a charm and warmth”.

“Shri Ameen Sayani Ji’s golden voice on the airwaves had a charm and warmth that endeared him to people across generations. Through his work, he played an important role in revolutionising Indian broadcasting and nurtured a very special bond with his listeners,” he said in a post on X. “Saddened by his passing away. Condolences to his family, admirers and all radio lovers. May his soul rest in peace,” the Prime Minister added.

Back from a short rest after two Test series against Pakistan and West Indies, the duo went up against a strong New Zealand batting line-up in Wellington that included the likes of Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway and Glenn Phillips.

Both Starc and Cummins picked up one wicket each and gave away 82 runs between themselves. While Starc had an economy of 9.75, Cummins registered his at 10.75. Starc picked the wicket of aggressive Finn Allen (32) in the 6th over of the match and registered figures of 4-0-39-1. On the other hand, Pat Cummins dismissed Rachin Ravindra (68) in the 16th over at a time when the left-hander was going hammer and tongs against Australia. Cummins registered figures of 4-0-43-1.

Health expert reveals how to pick up cancer in children, its types, diagnosis and treatment of pediatric cancers

The word cancer sounds scary especially when it is associated with children as cancer throws the entire family and the child out of gear. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Rajeev Redkar, Consultant Paediatric Cancer Surgeon at Lilavati Hospital, revealed, “The common type of cancer seen in children is cancer of the kidney which is Wilms tumour. Beside this, tumours of the liver are called hepatoblastomas and the tumours of the nervous system in the abdomen are called Neuroblastoma and lymphomas. The commonest cancer found in the child is a blood cancer which is called leukemia and lymphoma. These are the variants of cancer in children.”

How to pick up cancer in children?

Dr Rajeev Redkar answered, “A child who has a fever for a long period then the parents should consult the doctor. If the inability to gain weight, ill health, poor appetite, or less activeness then the parents should be alert and meet the paediatrician or a paediatric surgeon to get a prompt diagnosis of cancer.”

The diagnosis:

Dr Rajeev Redkar said, “If there is a lump in the abdomen or chest or swelling in the body, or the child is unable to pass stools then we suspect that there is some major problem with the child, and these children are investigated. Over 99 % of cancers are picked up on investigations such as CT scans, MRI, and sonography.”

The treatment:

Asserting that a majority of childhood cancers are treatable, Dr Rajeev Redkar shared, “80 % of cancers are treatable in children and they lead a normal life. For example- when it comes to Wilms tumor, 20-30 years ago, a significant number of children lost their precious lives due to the lack of treatment. Now, the survival rate has improved to 95%. Children can have an improved quality of life. Children will need treatment in the form of surgery to remove the tumor, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or immunotherapy to relieve the child’s cancer. Even anti-cancer drugs can be administered painlessly to the central veins of a child with cancer.”

He added, “Timely treatment for pediatric cancer can make a world of difference in the lives of children. Not only does it increase the chances of successful recovery but it also minimises the physical and emotional trauma that comes with prolonged illness. Research has shown that early intervention and targeted therapies can significantly improve outcomes for pediatric cancer patients, allowing them to lead healthier and fuller lives post-treatment. Timely treatment reduces the risk of cancer spreading to other parts of the body, which is crucial in improving long-term survival rates.”

Dr Rajeev Redkar concluded, “By focusing on early detection and prompt action, doctors can tailor treatment plans to each child’s specific needs, reducing unnecessary side effects often associated with aggressive late-stage interventions. Timely and effective treatments for pediatric cancer not only save lives but also ensure a better quality of life for children fighting this challenging disease.”

While the actor or Ranveer Singh’s teams are yet to confirm or deny this, here’s looking back at five times the actors spoke about parenthood.

I hope for a happy family’

In 2013, in a round table with Rajeev Masand, Deepika was asked what she would be doing if not for acting. She replied, “If I was not an actor, I don’t know what I would’ve been doing. But hopefully with some children around. Three little kids scuttling about. Hopefully, be working enough to take them to shoots, have a happy family. And at the same time, still doing what I’m doing.”

It’s Deepika’s call’

Deepika and Ranveer met on the sets of Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela in 2013 and got married in Italy in 2018. Soon after their marriage, Ranveer attended the India Economic Conclave where he was asked about having children. He said, “It’s not my call really. Partly yes, it’s my call but mostly it’s just her and I allow her that. I allow her to make most of the decisions because she is better at everything. I have no qualms in admitting that she is a much more mature, much more evolved person than me.”

We’re focused on our careers’

In 2019 there were rumours that Deepika was pregnant and the actor spoke to Hindustan Times about how ‘sad’ it is that society puts such pressure on people. “I think it’s sad that society kind of puts itself and people in this rut that okay you are dating for so long toh shaadi kab hogi, shaadi ke baad bacche (when will you marry, after marriage it’s kids) and then grandchildren. I’m not surprised (by the rumours), we’re not surprised by it at all,” she said, adding, “Do we intent on having children? Of course we do, we both love kids. But do we intend to have children anytime soon? Absolutely not! We’re too selfishly focused on our careers, and I don’t think having kids at this point would be fair. We’re not even thinking about kids.”

‘I’ll have kids in 2-3 years’

Two years after Deepika’s statement though it looked like the couple was ready for kids because Ranveer shared his excitement in 2021 on his TV show The Big Picture. He said, “Jaisa ki aap log jante hai meri shaadi ho gai hai aur ab 2-3 saal me bacche bhi honge. Bhaisaab, aapki bhabhi itni cute baby thi na. Mai to roz uski baby photos dekhta hoon, kehta hoon ek aisi de de mujhe bus meri life set ho jae (As you guys know I am married and may have kids in next two or three years. Bro, your sister-in-law (Deepika) was such a cute baby. I see her baby photos every day and tell her, give me one baby like this one, my life will be set).”

We look forward to it’

Deepika spoke to Vogue Singapore in January this year about how it’s easy to get carried away with the fame and money in the film industry. “In this industry, it’s easy to get carried away by fame and money. But no one treats me like a celebrity at home. I am a daughter and a sister first. I don’t want that to change. My family keeps me grounded and Ranveer and I hope to inculcate the same values in our children.” When asked if this means they’ll be parents soon, she added, “Absolutely. Ranveer and I love children. We look forward to the day we will start our own family.”

Farmers’ protest: Centre calls for talks, Haryana police fire tear gas shells!

The farmers, who are demanding MSP support from the government for all crops, on Wednesday resumed their Delhi Chalo march to press for their demands.

New Delhi: The Central government has appealed to the protesting farmers to hold the fifth round of talks. Union agriculture minister Arjun Munda on Wednesday said that the government is ready to discuss all outstanding issues, including MSP, stubble burning, withdrawal of FIRs etc. Meanwhile, farmer leader Rakesh Tikait’s BKU has opened yet another front in western Uttar Pradesh as farmers astride their tractors protested at several district headquarters.

“In the 5th round of meeting, we are ready to talk with farmers and discuss issues like MSP, stubble, FIR, and crop diversification. I appeal to them to maintain peace and we should find a solution through dialogue,” Munda said today.

He said the farmers’ side hasn’t reacted to the Centre’s offer.

“No information has come yet (from farmers’ side). We appeal that we should move forward for talks and present our stand. The government also wants to move forward and find a solution,” said.

The farmers, who are demanding MSP support from the government for all crops, on Wednesday resumed their Delhi Chalo march. Armed with gas masks, earthmovers and bulldozers, the farmers surged forward despite the tear gas shells fired by the Haryana police.

The Haryana police, meanwhile, have told the owners of the heavy machinery to steer clear of the protests or face legal action.

Meanwhile, in response to the Haryana government’s concerns about the agitating farmers using JCBs, Poclaines, Tippers, Hydras and other heavy machines at the Shambhu border, the DGP of Punjab has issued instructions directing all Punjab’s relevant officers to halt the movement of such machinery to the Punjab-Haryana borders.

Protests in Western UP

A huge crowd of farmers reached the collectorate at Muzaffarnagar on their tractors and staged a dharna.

BKU president Naresh Tikait and Rakesh Tikait are likely to participate in the tractor march.

BKU workers and farmers took out a tractor march near the tehsil in Shamli as well. The farmers tried to take the tractors inside the tehsil but the police stopped them. However, later farmers went inside the tehsil with tractors.

Similar protests were also held in Bagpat, Meerut, Hapur, Sambhal, Amroha and Saharanpur.

(Delhi Chalo)-The farmers on Monday rejected the Centre’s proposal of procuring pulses, maize and cotton at MSP by government agencies for five years.

Thousands of farmers from Punjab will resume their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march today, to press for their demand of MSP support for all crops. The protesting farmers, who are currently camping at the Haryana-Punjab Shambhu border, announced resumption of the agitation on Tuesday after the fourth round of talks with the central government failed. The march is expected to affect life in Delhi and its surrounding areas because security checkpoints set by the authorities to stop the protesting farmers might trigger traffic chaos.

Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has said the farmers’ don’t want to create chaos and will remain peaceful. Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said the protest march must be allowed to proceed to Delhi peacefully. Meanwhile, the Haryana police today detained some farmers in Manesar.

Here are the top updates on farmers’ protest:

  • Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come forward and help him end the protest. “We have told the govt that you can kill us but please don’t oppress the farmers. We request the Prime Minister to come forward and put an end to this protest by announcing a law on the MSP guarantee for the farmers…The country will not forgive such a govt…There are paramilitary forces deployed in the villages of Haryana…What crime have we committed?…We have made you the Prime Minister. We never thought that the forces would oppress us this way…Please protect the Constitution and let us peacefully head towards Delhi. This is our right,” he said.
  • Pandher promised that the protesting farmers will maintain peace. “We tried our best from our side. We attended the meetings, every point was discussed and now the decision has to be taken by the central government. We will remain peaceful…The Prime Minister should come forward and accept our demands. ₹1.5-2 lakh crore is not a huge amount…We should be allowed to remove these barriers and march towards Delhi,” he said.
  • Dallewal said putting huge barricades is not right. “Our intention is not to create any chaos… We have made a programme to reach Delhi since November 7. If the government says that they didn’t get enough time this means the government is trying to neglect us… This is not right that such huge barricades are placed to stop us. We want to go to Delhi peacefully. The government should remove the barricades and let us come in… Otherwise, they should fulfil our demands… We are peaceful… If they extend one hand, we will also cooperate… We have to handle the situation with patience… I appeal to the youngsters to not lose control,” he told ANI.
  • The central government has estimated that nearly 14,000 people have gathered along the Punjab-Haryana border, news agency PTI reported, citing sources. The farmers are travelling in 1200 tractor trolleys, 300 cars and 10 mini-buses. The home ministry further pointed out that 4500 people having 500 tractors were also allowed to gather at the Dhabi-Gujran barrier.
  • The ministry of home affairs has shot off a letter to the Punjab government, saying the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the state has been a matter of concern. The home ministry alleged that many miscreants in the guise of farmers were indulging in stone-pelting, mobilising heavy machinery along the Shambhu on Punjab’s border with Haryana.
  • The home ministry has also raised objections to the use of tractors, JCB machines and other heavy equipment during protests.
  • The farmers on Monday rejected the Centre’s proposal of procuring pulses, maize and cotton at MSP by government agencies for five years. Saying it was not in farmers’ interest, they announced that they will march towards Delhi today.
  • Last week, farmers clashed with the Haryana police as the latter halted their march with barbed wires, concrete barricades, iron nails and other drastic measures. They also shot tear gas shells to stop the protesters.
  • According to reports, after having failed to break through the police’s defences, the farmers have brought in heavy machinery, including excavators and JCB machines. Special arrangements have been made in these equipment so that people operating them don’t get hit by rubber bullets. Several farmers are also packing anti-riot gear, including gas masks.
  • The police, who used trucks and buses last week, are planning to block the farmers’ way with loaded shipping containers today. Heavy security deployment has been made at Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur borders, the three main entry points into the national capital. Traffic chaos is expected.
  • In total, 8000 security personnel have been deployed at the three main Delhi borders. The police have installed several layers of barriers, reinforced with concrete, barbed wires and iron nails. Dumpers, cranes and earthmovers are also being used to block the tractors from entering the national capital. The farmers are planning to reach Delhi via two approaches — via Shambhu, Ambala, Karnal, Panipat and Sonepat; and via Khanouri (on the Punjab-Haryana border), Jind and Rohtak.
  • The Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday slammed protesting farmers camping at Shambhu border with hundreds of tractors and said tractor trolleys can’t be used on highways. “According to the Motor Vehicle Act, you can’t use tractor-trolleys on the highway. You are travelling from Amritsar to Delhi on trolleys,” the bench remarked, underlining that “everyone knows about rights but there are constitutional duties” as well. The Haryana Police urged its Punjab counterparts on Tuesday to seize bulldozers as they could pose a safety risk.

Renowned jurist Fali S Nariman passes away at the age of 95!

Nariman received the Padma Bhushan in January 1991 and in 2007 he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan.

Renowned constitutional jurist and senior Supreme Court advocate Fali S Nariman passed away at the age of 95 in New Delhi on Wednesday.

In November 1950, Nariman became an advocate of the Bombay High Court, later earning the designation of senior advocate in 1961. With over 70 years of legal practice, he initially worked in the High Court of Bombay before shifting to New Delhi in 1972 to practice in the Supreme Court of India. Additionally, he served as Additional Solicitor General of India from May 1972 onwards, following his move from Bombay to Delhi.

The veteran lawyer was also the President of the Bar Association of India from 1991 to 2010.

Nariman received the Padma Bhushan in January 1991 and in 2007 he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan.

The veteran argued numerous significant cases, such as the NJAC verdict and the SC AoR Association case, which influenced the establishment of the collegium system. He also participated in cases like the TMA Pai case, addressing the extent of minority rights under Article 30. Notably, in June 1975, Nariman resigned as the Additional Solicitor General of India in opposition to the declaration of emergency by the Indira Gandhi government.

He served as the President of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration from 1994; the Vice-Chairman of the Internal Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce from 1989; and also the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Commission of Jurists in Geneva from 1995 to 1997; among several other prominent posts.

Nariman was a significant public voice in the country. Recently, he raised criticism against the judgement leading to the abrogation of Article 370.

In 2022, Nariman in his book, ‘You Must Know Your Constitution’, wrote, “The life of a written Constitution—like the life of the law—is not logic (or draftsmanship), but experience. Seventy-odd years of experience on this subcontinent has shown that it is easier to frame a Constitution than to work it….We will never be able to piece together a new Constitution in the present day and age simply because innovative ideas however brilliant and howsoever encouragingly expressed in consultation papers and reports of commissions, can never give us an ideal Constitution.”

He also spoke to HT, about the sedition law saying, “I am simply alarmed (and dismayed) by sedition remaining a part of the new law since it was always an oppressive colonial law that demanded not just mere obedience from the citizens to the orders of a foreign government but also insisted on citizens having an ‘affection’ for it. So when Gandhi ji was charged with sedition (as I have related in the book), he readily agreed and pleaded guilty to the charge since he had no ‘affection’ at all for the Government!”
