Radhika herself revealed in 2010 that she married JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy in 2006. They also have a daughter named Shamika. 

According to media reports, HD Kumaraswamy was 47 at the time of marriage while Radhika was 27 years younger than him. This was also HD Kumaraswamy’s second marriage. His first marriage took place in the year 1986. According to reports, this was also Radhika’s second marriage. She married a man named Ratan Kumar in the year 2000 but this marriage did not last long.

Students to get option of appearing in 10th, 12th board exams twice from 2025-26: Pradhan!

One of the objectives of the NEP 2020 is to reduce the academic stress on students, Pradhan said on Monday after launching the PM SHRI scheme in Chhattisgarh.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said students will get an option of appearing for 10th and 12th class board examinations twice a year from the academic session 2025-26.

One of the objectives of the new National Education Policy (NEP), unveiled in 2020, is to reduce the academic stress on students, Pradhan said on Monday after launching the PM SHRI (Prime Minister Schools for Rising India) scheme in Chhattisgarh under which 211 schools of the state will be upgraded.

The function was held at the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay auditorium in Raipur.

Highlighting the concept of introducing 10 bag-less days in school every year, the minister stressed on engaging students with art, culture and sports, among other activities.

On the Centre’s plan under the NEP 2020, Pradhan said from the 2025-26 academic session, students will get an opportunity to appear for the 10th and 12th class board exams twice.

According to the New Curriculum Framework (NCF) announced by the Ministry of Education in August last year, board examinations will be held at least twice a year to ensure students have enough time and opportunity to perform well. They will also get the option to retain the best score.

Pradhan asked students present at the function if they were happy with the decision, and told them to keep the best marks obtained after appearing in both the exams.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji’s vision through the NEP is to keep students stress-free, enrich them with quality education, keep students linked with culture and prepare them for the future. This is the formula for making India a developed country by 2047,” he said.

Pradhan slammed the previous Congress government in the state, saying education was not its priority, but the key sector has received utmost importance after the BJP came to power and new Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai assumed office in December last year.

In the first phase of the PM SHRI scheme, 211 schools (193 elementary level and 18 secondary ones) will be upgraded in Chhattisgarh on a ‘hub and spoke’ model by spending ₹2 crore on each of them, the Union minister said.

Under the model, the mentor institution, called the ‘hub’, will be centralised and have the responsibility of guiding the mentee institution through the secondary branches, the ‘spoke’, via services provided to the mentee for self-improvement.

As per a request made by Chhattisgarh’s School and Higher Education Minister Brijmohan Agrawal, more secondary and higher secondary schools will be covered under the scheme in its next phase, Pradhan said.

He said India will bid to host the 2036 Olympics Games and he expects that 10 per cent of medals for the country in the quadrennial event should come from Chhattisgarh athletes and preparations for it should start from this year itself.

Chief Minister Sai, minister Agrawal and other senior officials were present at the function.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has received a car from Russia’s President Vladimir Putin as a gift “for his personal use,” official media reported on Tuesday, in what could be a violation of U.N. ban that Moscow had joined to adopt against Pyongyang.

The two countries have forged closer ties since Kim and Putin met in September and pledged to promote exchanges in all areas as their international isolation deepened over Russia’s war in Ukraine and the North’s nuclear weapons development.

The Russian-made car was delivered to Kim’s top aides by the Russian side on Feb. 18, official KCNA news agency said.

Kim’s sister “courteously conveyed Kim Jong Un’s thanks to Putin to the Russian side, saying that the gift serves as a clear demonstration of the special personal relations between the top leaders,” KCNA said.

The report did not describe the car or how it was shipped from Russia. Kim is believed to be an avid automobile enthusiast and has a large collection of luxury foreign vehicles believed to be smuggled in.

In September, while visiting Russia’s space launch station in the far east, Kim inspected Putin’s presidential Aurus Senat limousine and was invited by the Russian leader to climb into the back seat.

Kim himself drove to the site in a Maybach limousine brought onboard a special train he travelled in from Pyongyang.

That vehicle and others he had been seen in including several Mercedes limousines, a Rolls-Royce Phantom and a Lexus sports utility vehicle fall under luxury goods that U.N. Security Council resolutions ban from export to North Korea.

Exchanges between the two countries have grown increasingly active and North Korea is believed to be supplying artillery, rockets and ballistic missiles to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine.

The Kremlin has not denied nor confirmed its use of North Korean-made weapons. North Korea denies the accusation of arms shipment to Russia, which would also be violations of U.N. sanctions.

On Tuesday, KCNA separately reported that a delegation of North Korea ruling party officials returned from Russia and three delegations, representing information technology, fisheries and sports, departed for Russia.

With an aim to give back to the community, Indian-American Ashwin Ramaswami is running from the Democratic party for State Senate in Georgia’s 48th district.

Ashwin Ramaswami, who has established a career in software engineering, election security and technology law, has become the first Indian-American from Gen Z to run for a state or federal legislature in the United States.

Also known as Zoomers, Generation Z includes people born between 1997 and 2012.

With an aim to give back to the community, Ramaswami is running from the Democratic party for State Senate in Georgia’s 48th district, which includes parts of Johns Creek, Suwanee, Alpharetta, Cumming, Sugar Hill, and Buford.

The position is presently held by Republican Shawn Still, who was indicted alongside former President Donald Trump on allegations of trying to overturn the 2020 election results.

Ashwin Ramaswami: The child of immigrants

Born to parents who immigrated to the US from Tamil Nadu in 1990, Ramaswami graduated from Stanford in 2021, where he studied computer science.

“I’m the child of immigrants, but I was born and raised in Johns Creek. For a long time, I was interested in how I could give back to my community. I didn’t want to stay in the Bay. I wanted to come and give back,” said Ramaswami, 24, in an interview to The Stanford Daily.

“I have strong ties. I’d also break barriers in terms of being the first Indian American and Gen Z member of the Georgia State Senate. So I’d bring a new voice to politics,” he added

Fond of epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata

Ramaswami, whose both parents are from the IT sector, has developed interest in Indian culture philosophy. While growing up, he enjoyed learning more about epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagavad Gita.

“My parents both came to the US in the 1990s. They both came from Tamil Nadu. My mom is from Chennai, my dad is from Coimbatore. I’ve always grown up with Indian culture and also American culture growing up as well. I’m a Hindu. I’ve been very interested in Indian culture philosophy my whole life,” he told in another interview to PTI.

“When I was in college, I actually learned Sanskrit and ended up reading a lot of ancient texts and got very interested in reading Upanishads, ..and my whole life I’ve been very involved in yoga and meditation and now also teaching Baal Vihara to younger students,” he said.

The challenges & decision behind running for the office

On being asked how his young age impacted the experience of running a campaign so far, he said: “It’s really about bridging that gap. So, of course, I’m talking to people my age who are excited there’s someone like them representing them, but then I’m talking a lot to people from other generations who have the resources that [Gen Z candidates] need to succeed but also understand we need new voices. The most important thing is your integrity and competence.”

Ramaswami further spoke about the issues he would be hoping to address if elected to the office. “Everyone should make sure they have access to a quality education. We want to make sure people have access to jobs and the economy, entrepreneurship and also access to healthcare, reproductive rights and all these issues that matter to us. That’s why I’ve been running.”

“Public safety is [a top priority] as well. We have to make sure our communities are safe. We really want to prevent things like school shootings,” he added.

If elected, he would be Georgia’s first Generation Z State Senator and the only state senator with degrees in both computer science and law. He would also make new ground as the first Indian American to serve in the Georgia State Legislature.

Ashwin Ramaswami’s work experience

Ramaswami, a Georgia native, has collaborated with organizations, startups, and small enterprises to leverage technology to benefit the public and provide job opportunities. As a public servant, he worked for the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) on cybersecurity and election security, collaborating with state and municipal election offices to ensure the 2020 and 2022 elections. He also served as a legal fellow for the Georgia Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division.

“I did my undergraduate at Stanford in computer science. I worked a lot on startups at work, but I soon realised that we need more tech people in the federal government, which is why I joined the federal government and started working on election security and cybersecurity starting in 2020,” he said.

Indians suffered worse post Covid lung damage than others, says study; how to improve lung function!

When it comes to lung damage, Covid seems to have taken a heavy toll on the respiratory health of Indians, compared to Europeans and Chinese, says a new study.

As per a new study, Indians Covid survivors suffered significant and greater lung function impairment compared to their Europeans and Chinese counterparts. When it comes to lung damage, Covid seems to have taken a heavy toll on the respiratory health of Indians, as demonstrated by this new study. The study done by Christian Medical College, Vellore on the impact of Covid-19 on the functioning of lungs and quality of life in Indians, was published in the PLOS Global Public Health journal

The study was done during the first wave of the pandemic in India on 207 Indians, and shows that the Indian subjects developed worse impairment in lung function compared to other published cohorts mostly with Caucasian subjects. This study was designed to study the impact of post-COVID-19 lung damage in patients who have recovered from Covid-19 infection with the help of lung function testing, exercise tolerance, chest radiography and quality of life measurement

The study added that while most may recover within a year of the infection, others may have permanent lung damage for life. Subjects were made to underwent pulmonary function tests, six-minute walking test, chest radiography, and St. George’s respiratory questionnaire.

“In a large Indian cohort, we have reported the presence of post-Covid-19 residual lung damage, as assessed by lung function tests, exercise capacity, chest radiography and quality of life measurements. Our population reported relatively higher symptomatology and comorbidities and greater lung function impairment, compared to most published studies. We have shown

that post-Covid-19 lung damage results in significant impairment of lung function, quality of life and effort tolerance,” said the study.

In people recovering from COVID-19, there is evidence of potential long-term pulmonary sequelae and associated lung function impairment. The most severe illness in the context of SARS-CoV-2 infection is acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In some, the ARDS may result in fibrotic interstitial lung disease.

Signs and Symptoms of Post-Covid Lung Damage

Post-Covid lung damage, also known as post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) or long COVID, can manifest in various ways, primarily affecting the respiratory system. Individuals recovering from COVID-19 may experience persistent symptoms indicative of lung damage, says Dr Neha Rastogi Consultant, Infectious Diseases, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram.

1. Shortness of breath: Difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath, particularly during physical activity, can persist long after the acute phase of the infection has passed.

2. Persistent cough: A lingering cough that lasts for weeks or months after the initial infection is common in individuals with post-Covid lung damage.

3. Chest pain or tightness: Some individuals may experience chest pain or tightness, which can be exacerbated by deep breathing or exertion.

4. Fatigue: Chronic fatigue is a common symptom of post-Covid lung damage, often accompanied by reduced exercise tolerance.

5. Decreased exercise tolerance: Individuals may notice a reduced ability to engage in physical activities they once tolerated, due to persistent shortness of breath or fatigue.

6. Frequent respiratory infections: Vulnerability to respiratory infections may increase following Covid-19, as lung damage can weaken the immune system’s ability to fend off pathogens.

How to treat post-Covid lung damage

Managing post-Covid lung damage involves a multidisciplinary approach aimed at alleviating symptoms and improving lung function, says Dr Rastogi.

Treatment strategies may include:

Pulmonary rehabilitation: Structured exercise programs supervised by healthcare professionals can help improve lung function, endurance, and overall physical health.

Medications: Bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed to alleviate symptoms such as shortness of breath and inflammation in the airways.

Oxygen therapy: In cases of severe lung damage, supplemental oxygen therapy may be necessary to ensure adequate oxygen levels in the bloodstream.

Nutritional support: A balanced diet rich in nutrients and hydration is essential for supporting overall health and aiding in recovery.

Psychological support: Dealing with chronic symptoms can take a toll on mental health. Counseling or support groups may be beneficial in coping with the emotional impact of post-Covid lung damage.

Regular monitoring: Close monitoring by healthcare providers is crucial to track progress, adjust treatment plans as needed, and address any emerging complications.

Even though Maldives has not gone bankrupt as media reports would have us believe, Male is heavily leveraged with external debt mounting to nearly USD 4.038 billion and the internal debt nearly matching the figure with debt crisis looming ahead in 2026. The gross national income of Mohammed Muizzu ruled Maldives is USD 5.6 billion as per official figures.

While Muizzu with his overt anti-India stance is asking for debt relief from his close friend Xi Jinping and Islamic emirates in the Middle-East, the Chinese debt of USD 1.3 billion constitutes nearly 30 per cent of its external debt with sovereign bonds maturing in 2026. Even though Muizzu sought financial support from the likes of Turkey and China, none is seen forthcoming as the Island nation reels in a fully blown economic crisis.

The Chinese surveillance ship Xiang Yang Hong 03, which was scheduled to dock at Male seaport for operational turnaround on February 8, is still awaited by the Maldivian authorities. The spy ship is currently located 20 hours from Male in the south Indian Ocean, well outside the EEZ of the Maldives, Sri Lanka and India.

For the record, the Chinese surveillance ship was only allowed to use the Male port for OTR and not conduct any survey or ocean bed mapping in the EEZ of Maldives and beyond.

While India is expected to replace the military crew of one ALH helicopter flying Maldivian flag by the end of this month or early March, the Modi government is on a wait and watch mode but fully prepared to help Maldives in case of an humanitarian disaster.

Rather than get worked up with Muizzu’s anti-India posture for his own political survival, the Modi government has given a green signal to Indian Navy to extend the air strip at Agatti islands in next door Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands with a new air base sanctioned for Minicoy islands. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will commission the first squadron of MH-60 R Sikorsky helicopters in Kochi on March 4-5 and then head towards Maldives on board India’s two aircraft carrier strike forces to Minicoy to commission a new base called INS Jatayu.

Even though Muizzu’s anti-India political posturing is aimed at the Majlis elections in April, the public mood towards China’s Belt Road Initiative (BRI) for infra development in Maldives is at best lukewarm. This is after a number of countries like Pakistan, Kenya and Tanzania are reeling under BRI debt after taking high interest loans from Chinese EXIM banks.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate over 14,000 projects valued at ₹10 lakh crore in Uttar Pradesh during the fourth ground-breaking ceremony of the Uttar Pradesh Global Investors Summit 2023 on Monday. The projects span diverse sectors such as manufacturing, renewable energy, IT and ITeS, food processing, housing, real estate, hospitality, entertainment, and education. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has relied on immigration to drive economic growth and plug labour gaps, but now he is hitting the brakes after a seismic shift in public opinion that could undermine his chances to win the next election.

It was Trudeau’s father, Pierre, who championed immigration as prime minister in the early 1970s, promoting “multiculturalism” as government policy. Over time, Canadians have come to see the country’s diversity as part of its identity, like the maple leaf and hockey.

But when international students led a surge in immigration in the wake of the pandemic, the public mood soured as rental costs soared and services like healthcare came under strain.

“One of the reasons why we got here in the first place was that (provincial and federal) governments just didn’t want to touch this issue out of a fear of looking xenophobic,” said Mike Moffatt, founding director of the Place Centre, a thinktank focused on sustainable housing.

Immigration went from historically high levels of support among Canadians in 2020 to a three-decade low at the end of 2023, according to Ekos Research polling company data provided exclusively to Reuters.

In October, 44.5% of Canadians told Ekos there were too many immigrants, citing lack of affordable housing as their main reason, up from a 30-year low of 14% in February 2022. Rental inflation hit 7.8% in the final quarter of last year.

For Trudeau, the stakes are high, as his main rival, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre has taken a commanding lead in opinion polls. Trudeau has to win back millions of voters to pull off a fourth national election victory, most likely next year.

“The chickens are coming home to roost,” said Kareem El-Assal, an immigration expert and consultant in Toronto. “There was a bit of hubris, thinking that we can just increase our immigration and temporary resident levels in perpetuity without there being any blowback whatsoever.”

Since taking power in 2015, Trudeau’s Liberal government has progressively ramped up immigration in a country where already more than a fifth of the citizens are foreign born. Last year the population grew at its fastest pace in more than six decades due almost exclusively to immigration.

Poilievre has said that he will link the number of newcomers to available housing, without providing details. But Poilievre has not pounced on the immigration issue like Republican politicians in the United States have done because he needs to win votes in immigrant communities to defeat Trudeau.

“The Conservatives, in my view, can’t exploit this issue,” said Hassan Yussuff, a senator and former labor leader. To win the election, Poilievre will be need to win urban centers that are filled with second- and third-generation immigrants, Yussuff said.

Still, the shift in public mood prompted the federal government to cap those granted permanent resident status at 500,000 starting next year and to cut study permits for international students by 35% to 360,000 starting in April.

Those moves are part of the effort to significantly reduce “the sheer volume” of newcomers “that has just gotten out of control”, Immigration Minister Marc Miller told Reuters in an interview last month.

There is a need to address the backlash because Canada is not immune to the polarisation seen in the United States, Miller said.
