Badaun Murders: 2 children beaten to death in Uttar Pradesh; suspects dead in police encounter

Badaun murder news: The event occurred while the two youngsters, aged around 11 and 6, were playing on the rooftop of a building in Baba Colony.

Badaun murders 2 children

A guy hacked the children to death on Tuesday evening in Uttar Pradesh Badaun’s Baba Colony before being slain in an encounter with police, according to news agency ANI.

The incident occurred as the two youngsters, aged around 11 and six, were playing on the terrace of a building. The culprit, named as Sajid, arrived and waited for some time before killing them, according to Bareilly Inspector-General of Police Rakesh Kumar. According to the Indian Express, the victims were brothers Ayush and Honey.

“When the police arrived, the accused attempted to flee the scene. We pursued the accused. He opened fire on cops and was murdered in retaliation. The accused died on the spot. “The police are looking into the case,” Rakesh Kumar stated.

“The accused Sajid entered the residence yesterday around 7:30 p.m. and walked to the terrace, where the children were playing. He attacked and murdered the two children. He then came down, and the throng attempted to keep him back, but he fled…When police learned that the accused had escaped, they acted quickly…Badaun SSP Alok Priyadarshi informed ANI that the accused fired at the police and was killed in retaliation.

He stated that the murder weapon and pistol had been recovered. In the FIR, the family of the murdered children names the accused’s brother, Javed. “Teams are working to find him, and he will be arrested soon,” the SSP announced.

Who is the accused and why did he kill the children?

IG Rakesh Kumar said the accused is aged between 25 and 30 years. “We will be disclosing their details after further investigation,” he said.

When asked about the motive behind the murders, Badaun district magistrate (DM) Manoj Kumar said, “The reason for the murder is not clear yet. It will be found out during the investigation.”

Reports, however, claimed that there was some dispute over money which led to the incident. The SSP, citing the victim’s family, said the accused had demanded ₹5,000 from the father of the deceased children. He said the police were now investigating what led to the murder.

Tension in Badaun

Heavy police security was deployed at the Baba Colony located near the Mandi Samiti outpost as locals protested against the ghastly double murder.

NDTV reported that angry locals set a shop on fire after the incident in Baba Colony. The situation is now under control, the police said.

District magistrate Manoj Kumar said some people got agitated after the incident and they have been asked to maintain peace.

“We received information this evening that at Baba colony near the Mandi Samiti police outpost, a man entered a house and murdered two young children. After the incident, some people got agitated. The people have been asked to maintain peace,” Manoj Kumar told ANI. He added that the bodies have been sent for postmortem. “We have assured them that an investigation will be carried out,” the DM said.

Medanta chairman promotes weight loss drug in ‘deep fake’ video, case filed

The Gurugram Police has registered a case concerning a social media clip publicizing a drug with a fake testimony of Medanta Hospital chairman Dr Naresh Trehan.

Medanta chairman

The Gurugram Police has registered a case concerning a social media clip publicising a drug with the fake testimony of Medanta Hospital chairman Dr Naresh Trehan.

According to the Cyber Crime unit of the police, the FIR has been registered under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against “unknown persons” in connection with the case.

The case came after a video of Dr Trehan went viral on social media in which he was seen participating in a TV show and recommending an anti-obesity medicine.

As the video went viral, a case was filed by the hospital’s assistant vice president (AVP) for marketing, Harish Aswani, saying that a fabricated video had surfaced on social media that contained misleading information about medical treatment.

“The deepfake video features our CMD (chairman and managing director) Dr. Naresh Trehan, who can be seen endorsing this particular medication. Dr. Naresh Trehan is one of the most trusted clinicians in the country and this video damages the reputation of Dr. Trehan and Medanta Hospitals,” news agency PTI quoted Aswami as saying in the case.

“Furthermore, it may lead to unwarranted scepticism and apprehension among patients who rely on accurate and reliable information for their medical needs,” it added.

Notably, deepfake is a technology that uses AI to doctor pictures or videos in such a manner that the person can impersonate anyone and say something or do activities that never actually occurred.

Following the complaint, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at a local police station of Gurugram.

Finland remains world’s happiest country for seventh straight year

According to the World Happiness Report, Finland remained the world’s happiest country for the seventh straight year. Meanwhile, Afghanistan, which is under Taliban rule, stayed at the bottom of the 143 countries surveyed.

Finland remains world's happiest country for seventh straight year

In Short

  • Finland tops UN’s World Happiness Report for seventh year
  • US, Germany drop out of top 20; Costa Rica, Kuwait enter
  • Younger generations are happier than older ones, except in North America, Australia, and New Zealand

Finland remained the world’s happiest country for a seventh straight year in an annual UN-sponsored World Happiness Report published on Wednesday.

And Nordic countries kept their places amongst the 10 most cheerful, with Denmark, Iceland and Sweden trailing Finland.

Afghanistan, plagued by a humanitarian catastrophe since the Taliban regained control in 2020, stayed at the bottom of the 143 countries surveyed.

For the first time since the report was published more than a decade ago, the United States and Germany were not among the 20 happiest nations, coming in 23rd and 24th respectively.

In turn, Costa Rica and Kuwait entered the top 20 at 12 and 13.

The report noted the happiest countries no longer included any of the world’s largest countries.

“In the top 10 countries only the Netherlands and Australia have populations over 15 million. In the whole of the top 20, only Canada and the UK have populations over 30 million.”

The sharpest decline in happiness since 2006-10 was noted in Afghanistan, Lebanon and Jordan, while the Eastern European countries Serbia, Bulgaria and Latvia reported the biggest increases.

The happiness ranking is based on individuals’ self-assessed evaluations of life satisfaction, as well as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity and corruption.

Growing inequality

Jennifer De Paola, a happiness researcher at the University of Helsinki in Finland, told AFP that Finns’ close connection to nature and healthy work-life balance were key contributors to their life satisfaction.

In addition, Finns may have a “more attainable understanding of what a successful life is”, compared to for example the United States where success is often equated with financial gain, she said.

Finns’ strong welfare society, trust in state authorities, low levels of corruption and free healthcare and education were also key.

“Finnish society is permeated by a sense of trust, freedom, and high level of autonomy,” De Paola said.

This year’s report also found that younger generations were happier than their older peers in most of the world’s regions — but not all.

In North America, Australia and New Zealand, happiness among groups under 30 has dropped dramatically since 2006-10, with older generations now happier than the young.

By contrast, in Central and Eastern Europe, happiness increased substantially at all ages during the same period, while in Western Europe people of all ages reported similar levels of happiness.

Happiness inequality increased in every region except Europe, which authors described as a “worrying trend”.

The rise was especially distinct among the old and in Sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting inequalities in “income, education, health care, social acceptance, trust, and the presence of supportive social environments at the family, community and national levels,” the authors said.

Pashupati Kumar Paras said injustice had been done with his party. “Therefore, I resign from the post of Union Minister.”

 Pashupati Kumar Paras

Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party (RLJP) President Pashupati Kumar Paras on Tuesday resigned from the Modi Cabinet, a day after his party was denied any seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Bihar. “Yesterday, the NDA alliance announced the list of 40 candidates for Bihar Lok Sabha. Our party had five MPs and I worked with utmost sincerity. Injustice has been done with us & our party. Therefore, I resign from the post of Union Minister,” he said.

On Monday, the NDA partners announced seat-sharing in Bihar. As per the deal, the BJP will contest 17 seats, while Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) will contest 16 and Chirag Paswan’s LJP will fight on 5. Chirag-led LJP will contest on five seats — Vaishali, Hajipur, Samastipur, Khagariya and Jamui.

In the last election, the undivided LJP had won six seats. Pashupati Paras was expecting these seats for his party. However, the BJP went with Chirag.

There was no mention of seat-sharing with the LJP faction led by Minister Pashupati Paras. When asked about it, Bihar BJP chief Samrat Choudhary said, “Talks with him are ongoing.”

Jitan Ram Manjhi-led Hindustani Aawam Morcha (HAM) and Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP) will contest one seat each.

Among the key seats that the BJP will be contesting from are Pashchim Champaran, Purvi Champaran, Aurangabad, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Maharajganj, Saran, Begusarai, Nawada, Patna Sahib, Patliputra, Aara, Buxar and Sasaram.

The JD(U) has been given Valmikinagar, Sitamadhi, Jhanjharpur, Supaul, Kishanganj, Katihar, Purnia, Madhepura, Gopalganj, Siwan, Bhagalpur, Banka, Munger, Nalanda, Jehanabad and Sheohar seats.

Imad Wasim was observed smoking in the locker room following Islamabad United’s five-wicket victory in the PSL 2024 finals!

Imad Wasim, who became the first bowler to take five wickets in a PSL final, was observed smoking in the Islamabad United dressing room.

Imad Wasim, a former all-rounder for Pakistan, was found smoking in the dressing room on Monday after he astonishingly claimed five wickets for Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season nine final against Multan Sultans at Karachi’s National Bank Cricket Arena. The impressive bowling performance and Martin Guptill’s half-century were key components of Islamabad’s two-wicket win and third PSL title.

Wasim ran riot through the Multan Sultan batting line-up after Islamabad were put to bowl first in the summit clash. He handed the team the first breakthrough, in the second over, dismissing opener Yasir Khan before combining with captain Shadab Khan to send Multan four down for 85 runs in the 12th over.On returning to attack, Wasim dismissed Khusdil and Chris Jordan in successive deliveries, but was denied a hat-trick. He eventually finished with 5 for 23, becoming the first-ever bowler to pick up a fifer in a PSL final as Multan were restricted to 159 for nine.

After the impressive show with the ball, Wasim went to the dressing room and was seen smoking, a visual of which went viral on social media.

This isn’t the first instance that a cricketer was spotted smoking in the dressing room. Back in 2022, during an international match, Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Shahzad was caught smoking and was later reprimanded by match officials. More recently, during the 2023 ODI World Cup tournament, Australia’s Glenn Maxwell was seen smoking an e-cigarette in the dressing room.

In reply, Guptill’s 32-ball 50 kept Islamabad alive in the chase despite wickets falling at regular intervals. The veteran New Zealand batter later found himself in a 47-run stand with wicketkeeper-batter Azam Khan which revived the side. However, it was Naseem Shah’s cameo of 9-ball 17, laced with a maximum and two boundaries, and Hunain Shah’s title-winning boundary in the last ball that seal the victory for Islamabad.

US Senator ‘deeply concerned’ about CAA impact on Muslims in India

Voicing concern over the CAA rollout in India, US Senator Ben Cardin stated that it is vital for cooperation between Washington and New Delhi to be rooted in shared values of safeguarding human rights, regardless of religion.

CAA impact on Muslims in India

In Short

  • US lawmaker expresses concern over India’s CAA enforcement
  • Senator Ben Cardin speaks on potential impact on Muslim community
  • Senator says India-US cooperation needs to be based on shared values.

An influential US lawmaker has voiced apprehension regarding the Indian government’s issuance of rules for the enforcement of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), stating that it is vital for cooperation between Washington and New Delhi to be rooted in shared values of safeguarding human rights irrespective of religion.

“I am deeply concerned by the Indian government’s decision to notify its controversial Citizenship Amendment Act, particularly the law’s potential ramifications on India’s Muslim community. Making matters worse is the fact that it is being pushed during the holy month of Ramadan,” stated Senator Ben Cardin, chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“As the US-India relationship deepens, it is critically important that our cooperation is based on our shared values of protecting the human rights of all persons, regardless of religion,” he continued.

The lawmaker’s remarks coincide with Hindu American groups’ endorsement of the rollout of CAA.

Last week, the US State Department voiced concerns over the notification of CAA. Spokesperson Matthew Miller said the Biden administration would be closely monitoring the implementation of the contentious law.

“Respect for religious freedom and equal treatment under the law for all communities are fundamental democratic principles,” Miller had said.

India promptly criticised the US State Department’s critique of the CAA as “misinformed and unwarranted.”

The Centre implemented the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, last week, facilitating citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014.

Additionally, the government issued a press statement asserting that Indian Muslims need not fear as the CAA will not affect their citizenship and is unrelated to the community, which enjoys equal rights as Hindus.

PM Modi’s Reply after Bulgarian President praises ‘brave’ Indian Navy for ‘MV Ruen’ rescue mission.

Narendra Modi stated that India is dedicated to maintaining freedom of navigation while tackling piracy and terrorism in the Indian Ocean.

PM Modi's Reply after Bulgarian President

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Tuesday that India is dedicated to defending freedom of navigation and tackling piracy and terrorism in the Indian Ocean region, after Bulgarian President Rumen Radev congratulated him for the Indian Navy’s rescue of his country’s ship and crew.

Rumen Radev wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “My sincere gratitude to PM Narendra Modi for the brave action of the India Navy in rescuing the hijacked Bulgarian ship ‘Ruen’ and its crew, including seven Bulgarian citizens.”

Modi replied that he liked the message.

“We are relieved that seven Bulgarian nationals are safe and will be coming home shortly. “India is committed to protecting freedom of navigation and combating piracy and terrorism in the Indian Ocean region,” Modi stated.

Earlier on Sunday, Bulgaria’s deputy prime minister hailed India, Modi, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for successfully retrieving the hijacked MV Ruen.

“I thank the navy for a successful operation to free the hijacked vessel Ruen and its crew members, including seven Bulgarian nationals. Thank you for your support and hard work. “We continue to work together to protect the crew’s lives,” Bulgarian Minister Mariya Gabriel wrote on X. “That’s what friends are for,” Jaishankar responded.

On Saturday, the Indian Navy forced 35 pirates to surrender and successfully recovered the MV Ruen, which Somali pirates had seized on December 14, last year. The seizure of the Bulgarian-owned MV Ruen was the first time Somali pirates boarded a commercial vessel since 2017. On Saturday, all crew members were safely retrieved, with no injuries.

The Indian Navy claimed that INS Kolkata led the operation. The Navy used its P-8I maritime patrol aircraft, together with frontline ships INS Kolkata and INS Subhadra, as well as a high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) unmanned aerial vehicle. On Saturday, the Indian Air Force’s C-17 aircraft dropped two boats alongside Indian Navy MARCOS in the Arabian Sea to support the ongoing anti-piracy effort ‘Operation Sankalp’.

During the 40-hour rescue mission, INS Kolkata intercepted the pirate ship MV Ruen, which was under attack over 2600 kilometres from the Indian coast. Through smart maneuvers, INS Kolkata forced the pirate ship to halt its voyage.

“On March 16, INS Kolkata, a mission deployed in the Arabian Sea, intercepted the pirate ship MV Ruen, thwarting Somali pirates’ plans to capture ships sailing through the region. The commerce vessel was hijacked in December 2023 and has since been under the custody of Somali pirates, according to an Indian Navy statement.

Since December, when Somali pirates hijacked the MV Ruen 380 nautical miles east of Yemen’s Socotra island, the Indian navy has been watching it. At that time, the pirates handed over one injured Bulgarian sailor to the Indian Navy.

They then transported the MV Ruen and its 17 crew members to Somalia’s semi-autonomous province of Puntland, where the Indian navy claimed it was anchored near Bosaso.
