Musheer Khan breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s Ranji Trophy record in front of Master Blaster with century in final for Mumbai!

With Sachin Tendulkar in attendance, Musheer Khan broke the Master Blaster’s record and became the youngest Mumbai batter to score century in Ranji Trophy final

Musheer Khan on Tuesday became the youngest Mumbai batter to hit a century in the final of a Ranji Trophy as the 41-time champions strengthened their grip against Vidarbha in their pursuit of securing a record-extending 42nd title. Musheer, the younger brother of India Test cricketer Sarfaraz Khan, at the age of 19 years and 14 days, in the process, surpassed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who previously held the record for 29 long years.

Musheer, who resumed on his overnight score of 51, completed his 2nd First-class century, to go with his maiden double hundred in the quarter-final against Baroda. When play resumed on Day 3, Musheer resumed the batting with captain Ajinkya Rahane as the two continued to pile runs. Already ahead with a lead of 119 runs at stumps on Day 2, from 141/2, Mumbai had progressed to 164 when they lost their captain for 73, but in the company of Shreyas Iyer, Musheer flourished.

With a clip off his pads, Musheer completed his century. He took off his helmet and went a step ahead of Tendulkar with the Master Blaster himself in attendance. Tendulkar, a two-time Ranji Trophy winner, was in attendance at the Wankhede, to see his team add another father in its cap. It was in the final of the 1994/95 season that Tendulkar, a month short of turning 22, had peeled off twin centuries against Punjab and became the youngest Mumbaikar to the landmark. His record stood tall for nearly three decades before Musheer bettered it.

Musheer and Iyer’s stand was worth 168 off 256 balls before the partnership was broken. Five short of 95, Iyer wanted to clear the boundary off Aditya Thakare but didn’t get the timing right and holed out at long-off.

Musheer’s red-hot form

Musheer’s dream run also saw him score a half-century in Mumbai’s semifinal against Tamil Nadu, scoring 55. Musheer has been in good form of late. He was the second highest scorer during last month’s Under-19 World Cup, with 360 runs at an average of 60, with two centuries and a fifty.

In fact, it’s been an eventful few months for the entire Khan family as big brother Sarfaraz made his debut for India in the third Test against England at Rajkot and went on to score three fifties in five innings.

Haiti PM Ariel Henry resigns amid pressure, chaos

Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry has resigned amid pressure and chaos in the Caribbean nation.

Haiti PM Ariel Henry

In Short

  • Ariel Henry, Haiti’s PM, has resigned
  • Henry took over in 2021 after President Jovenel Moise’s assassination
  • Resignation followed regional leaders’ meeting in Jamaica

Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry has resigned amid pressure and chaos in the Caribbean nation. He became the Prime Minister in 2021 following the assassination of the country’s last president, Jovenel Moise.

Henry has issued his resignation as the Caribbean nation’s head of government, the chair of the Caribbean Community said on Monday.

“We acknowledge his resignation upon the establishment of a transitional presidential council and naming of an interim prime minister,” said Caribbean Community chair Irfaan Ali, also the president of Guyana, thanking Henry for his service to Haiti.

Henry travelled to Kenya late last month to secure the leadership of a UN-backed international security mission to help police fight armed gangs, but a drastic escalation of violence in the capital Port-au-Prince during his absence left him stranded in the US territory of Puerto Rico.

Henry’s resignation comes as regional leaders met earlier on Monday in nearby Jamaica to discuss the framework for a political transition, which the US urged last week to be “expedited” while gangs called for Henry to step down.

Regional officials have been engaged in talks involving members of Haiti’s political parties, the private sector, civil society and religious groups aimed at establishing the transition council that would pave the way to the first elections since 2016.

Henry, who many Haitians consider corrupt, had repeatedly postponed elections, saying security must first be restored.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had earlier on Monday called for the creation of a “broad-based, inclusive, independent presidential college”.

This council would be tasked with meeting the “immediate needs” of Haitian people, enabling the security mission’s deployment and creating security conditions necessary for free elections, Blinken said.

How The Implementation Of CAA Affects Matuas, Hindu Refugees From Bangladesh

The implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act could sway the elections in West Bengal where the Matua community — Hindu refugees from Bangladesh — form the state’s second-largest SC population.

Hindu Refugees

In Short

  • Matua community celebrates implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act
  • Implementation could impact upcoming elections, Matuas form substantial SC population
  • Several members of Thakur family, Matua sect founder active in politics.

The central government on Monday announced the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), a move sought by the Matua community in West Bengal, a Hindu sect of refugees who migrated from Bangladesh.

The community has been demanding the implementation of the act which will provide Indian citizenship to migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who belong to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian communities.

Classified as a Scheduled Caste (SC), Matuas are Namasudras or lower caste Hindu refugees who have migrated to West Bengal from neighbouring Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan).

The implementation of the Citizenship Act could have a significant impact on the upcoming elections as Matuas form West Bengal’s second-largest Scheduled Caste population.

The community mostly resides in the North and South 24 Parganas districts and across the bordering districts like Nadia, Howrah, Cooch Behar, North and South Dinajpur and Malda.

The Namasudras constitute 17.4 per cent of the total SC population in West Bengal, the second-largest in the state after the Rajbanshis in North Bengal.

An overwhelming majority of Bengal’s 1.8 crore SC population are Hindus (99.96 per cent). Of its 42 Lok Sabha seats, Bengal has 10 seats reserved for Scheduled Castes, of which the BJP bagged four – Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Bishnupur and Bongaon in 2019.

POLITICAL LEGACY OF MATUAS

The Matua sect was founded by Harichand Thakur and his descendants, who reside in the North 24 district, has a long association with politics.

Harichand’s great-grandson Pramatha Ranjan Thakur became a member of the West Bengal legislative assembly as a Congress candidate in 1962. It was PR Thakur’s widow, the centenarian Binapani Devi, who until recently, was the mascot of the community.

In recent years, multiple members of the Thakur family have tried their luck in politics, backed by their standing in the Matua Mahasangha—the apex body of the sect.

Binapani Devi’s eldest son, Kapil Krishna Thakur, was the TMC MP from Bongaon in 2014. His younger brother Manjul Krishna became a TMC MLA from Gaighata in 2011.

Manjul’s elder son Subrata Thakur contested the Bongaon bypoll in 2015 on a BJP ticket after the sudden demise of his uncle, TMC MP Kapil Krishna Thakur.

Challenging him was his aunt Mamata Bala Thakur, Kapil Krishna’s widow, who eventually retained the seat for the TMC.

In 2019, Santanu Thakur, son of Manjul Krishna, won the Bongaon Lok Sabha seat for the BJP. He is currently the Union Minister of State for Shipping in the Modi government.

Subrata Thakur, another son of Manjul Krishna, is the BJP MLA from Gaighata assembly seat in the same region.

The woman’s lawyer argued that she is an uneducated widow and has no one to take care of her.

Delhi Woman gets 6 months jail

A Delhi Court sentenced a woman to six months in jail for not filing a return on income of ₹2 crores after a complaint was filed by the Income Tax Office (ITO) alleging that TDS (tax deducted at source) amounting to Rs. 2 lakh was deducted against the receipt of ₹2 crore made to the accused during 2013-14, but no return of income was filed. The court sentenced Savitri noting, “The convict is awarded a sentence of simple imprisonment for six months with a fine of ₹5,000 and in default to undergo simple imprisonment for one month.”

While Savitri’s lawyer argued that she is an uneducated widow and has no one to take care of her after which the court granted her 30 days’ bail to challenge the order.

The court noted that the complainant was able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that notices were issued to the accused owing to which she was bound to file a return of income which was admittedly not filed by the accused.

“Accordingly, the accused is held guilty of not filing the return of income for the assessment year 2014-15 under Section 276CC of The Act. Accordingly, the accused is convicted for an offence punishable under Section 276CC of the Act,” the court said in the judgement.

What is ITR?

Income Tax Return or ITR is a form which is used to show your gross taxable income for the fiscal year. ITR is used by taxpayers to formally declare their income, deductions claimed, exemptions and taxes paid and thus it calculates net income tax liability in a fiscal year.

As per Income Tax Act of 1961, a person under 60 years of age must file tax returns if a part of their income is taxable. It is mandatory to file your income tax returns if your income is more than the basic exemption limit. Income Tax filing can be completed from both online and offline channels.

CAA Rules Notified: BJP fulfils another promise made in 2019 poll manifesto!

The BJP expects to reap dividends from the announcement made on Monday in Assam, Punjab and West Bengal.

CAA Rules Notified

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fulfilled yet another promise made in its 2019 election manifesto with the notification of the rules for the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls that will set in motion the process of fast-tracking citizenship rights for persecuted minorities from the neighbourhood.

“The Modi government today notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024. These rules will now enable minorities persecuted on religious grounds in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to acquire citizenship in our nation. With this notification PM Shri @narendramodi Ji has delivered on another commitment and realised the promise of the makers of our constitution to the Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians living in those countries,” Union home minister Amit Shah posted on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the announcement.

The BJP expects to reap dividends from the announcement made on Monday in Assam, Punjab and West Bengal. In West Bengal, where the Matua community counted among Scheduled Castes migrated from Bangladesh mainly because of religious persecution, the government promised the implementation of CAA to placate the community that has been on the fringes of economic and social growth.

The party is also hoping to earn support from Sikhs who migrated to India from Afghanistan and about 500 Hindu families who have arrived in batches from Pakistan and are spread over Delhi and Rajasthan. There is no data on how many families will benefit from the law. The government stated in Parliament in 2019 that 1,595 Pakistani and 391 Afghan migrants of all religions have been granted Indian citizenship between 2016 to 2018.

“Provision for capturing online citizenship data of migrants from minority communities namely Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian hailing from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh was introduced in 2018. As per the available data, 295 Hindus and Sikhs from Afghanistan and Pakistan have been granted Indian Citizenship since then,” Union minister Kiren Rijiju has said in a written reply.

Apart from the commitment to construct a Ram Temple and remove the provisions of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, which gave the erstwhile state special status, the party’s election manifesto spelt out the BJP’s commitment for giving Hindus, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists, Christians and Sikhs, who were persecuted in countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh a place in India and the rights to become a citizen. It will benefit who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

The party has met all three promises, although the pending promise of implementing a uniform civil code is being implemented by separate BJP-ruled states. While the Bill to read down Article 370 was passed in Parliament in August 2019, the consecration of the Ram temple took place on January 25.

“We are committed to the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Bill for the protection of individuals of religious minority communities from neighbouring countries escaping persecution,” the 2019 manifesto had said.

The party also clarified that it would address the concerns of the locals in the northeastern states that had apprehensions regarding the legislation. There were widespread protests against the provisions of the law after Parliament passed it in December 2019. “We reiterate our commitment to protect the linguistic, cultural and social identity of the people of Northeast,” the manifesto had said.

In the wake of protests from minorities in India that perceived CAA and the proposed national register of citizens (NRC) to impinge on their rights and identity, the BJP led outreach campaigns to assuage fears that the new law will take away their rights.

“The implementation of the CAA was intended to help those minorities who had nowhere else to go, but could count on India as their natural homeland. Take for instance the Hindus in Pakistan and Bangladesh who have been at the receiving end of extremist policies and the Sikhs who had to flee Afghanistan after the Taliban take over,” said a functionary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological fount of the ruling BJP that has rallied support for the implementation of the law.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad, an affiliate of the RSS, said that it will provide all help to refugees to complete the formalities of applying for citizenship. “This is in accord with the Indian tradition of giving refuge, respect and dignity to all those who suffer indignities outside and seek the shelter of Mother India,” its international working president Alok Kumar said.

While states such as West Bengal, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh (then under Congress rule), Punjab, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu passed resolutions against the Act in 2019, on Monday West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said the notification of the rules is timed with the impending elections.

“This law was passed in 2020. After multiple extensions in four years, its implementation two to three days before the election announcement shows that it is being done for political reasons,” she said.

The Congress also linked the timing to elections. “It has taken four years and three months for the Modi Government to notify the rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act that was passed by the Parliament in December 2019. The Prime Minister claims that his Government works in a business-like and time-bound manner. The time taken to notify the rules for the CAA is yet another demonstration of the Prime Minister’s blatant lies,” Congressman Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X.

After seeking nine extensions for the notification of rules, the timing right before the elections is “evidently designed to polarise the elections, especially in West Bengal and Assam” and to manage the headlines after the Supreme Court’s severe strictures on the “Electoral Bonds Scandal.”

Electoral bonds: Supreme Court rejects SBI’s plea, orders it to furnish details tomorrow!

Electoral bonds: The Supreme Court also ordered the Election Commission to put the information released by SBI on its website by 5 pm on March 15.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the State Bank of India’s (SBI) plea seeking more time to furnish the details of electoral bonds to the Election Commission and ordered the country’s biggest bank to submit the same by the business hours of March 12, Tuesday. The apex court also ordered the poll panel to put the information on its website by 5 pm, March 15.

The court has warned the SBI chairman and managing director that they will face contempt proceedings if its order is not complied with within the timeline.

In a landmark verdict delivered on February 15, a five-judge Constitution bench scrapped the Centre’s electoral bonds scheme that allowed anonymous political funding, calling it “unconstitutional”.

The Supreme Court had ordered the SBI to disclose details on donors, the amount donated by them and the recipients, by March 13.

The SBI last week requested the court to extend the deadline for the disclosure of the details of the bond to June 30.

Today, a bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud and justices Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai, J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, pulled up the bank, saying what was it doing over the last 26 days.

“In the last 26 days, what steps have you taken? Your application is silent on that,” the bench said.

The SBI has to just open the sealed cover, collate the details and give the information to the Election Commission, the bench added.

Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the SBI, argued in the court that the bank needed more time to collate the details and match them as the information was kept in two different silos in its branches.

He further said the SBI would need at least three weeks to complete the exercise.

In response, the court said it only asked SBI to do a plain disclosure.

After SBI sought an extension of the deadline earlier this month, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge had said the BJP government was using the bank as a shield for its “dubious dealings”.

“The Modi government is using the largest bank of our country as a shield to hide its dubious dealings through Electoral Bonds… the BJP wants it to be done after the Lok Sabha elections. The tenure of this Lok Sabha will end on 16th June and SBI wants to share the data by 30th June,” Kharge had said.
