KL Rahul back in India after medical consultation, set for IPL 2024 return and ‘in line’ for T20 World Cup:

KL Rahul is expected to be back for the IPL 2024 as captain Lucknow Super Giants to give his chances of playing the T20 World Cup a boost.

KL Rahul has returned to India following a medical examination trip to London, and is gearing to make his comeback with Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2024. Rahul, who sustained an injury in his right quadriceps while playing the first England Test in Hyderabad, was ruled out of the remaining four games due to the same, but with the 16th season of the Indian Premier League approaching, the LSG captain is eager to hit the ground running after his season was cut short in 2023.

According to a report in the Times of India, Rahul’s quick trip to London was a success and the India batter has hit the National Cricket Academy to be ready in time for LSG’s season opener against Rajasthan Royals on March 24. Rahul had to miss a significant chunk of last IPL after he injured his hamstring in the game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, and hence, the LSG captain wants to ensure he enters the fresh edition fit and match ready.

“He had consulted top medical experts in London. He returned to India on Sunday and has checked into the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy in Bangalore for rehab. He should get the Return to Play certificate from the NCA soon,” the report stated.

Another motivation behind Rahul’s dedication towards getting fit is the upcoming T20 World Cup. Rahul, like his senior pros Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, was momentarily out of the format after India’s defeat to England in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final, but while ‘Ro-Ko’ made their returns in the Afghanistan T20Is, KL is yet to make that move. However, the same report mentions that Rahul is ‘in-line’ to earn a T20 recall for the T20 World Cup that begins June 1 in the USA and West Indies.

“He is keen to prove his worth in the IPL as he’s in line for selection in India’s T20 World Cup team as a ‘keeper-bat.”

KL Rahul’s T20 conundrum

While Rahul may be in contention for a place in the World Cup squad, he, no doubt, will receive stiff competition from the likes of Rinku Singh and Sanju Samson in the middle-order. There are two ways to look at Rahul when it comes to his place in the Playing XI. One is purely as a batter, which won’t be easy given Hardik Pandya and the returning Suryakumar Yadav being automatic picks.

But second, if he is to be picked as a wicketkeeper-batter, Rahul’s chances increase. India are yet to decide on a particular wicketkeeper-batter since Rishabh Pant was sidelined. Ishan Kishan is nowhere in the picture currently and Jitesh Sharma hasn’t done enough to cement his place in the team. The only name that makes somewhat of a case here is that of Samson, but given the choice between the two, it is likely that the management will opt for Rahul.

Then again, a lot will be decided between now and the IPL, where both Rahul and Samson will have a point to prove. Rahul may or may not keep for LSG, with the latter possibility being higher. As for Samson, he too may not take on the wicketkeeping duties as Jos Buttler has been performing that role adequately.

PM Modi not real Hindu, didn’t get tonsured on mother’s death: Lalu Yadav

RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “is not a real Hindu” as he did not get his head shaved when his mother Heeraba Modi died in 2022.

  • First Mahagathbandhan rally held in Patna, attended by Opposition leaders
  • Lalu Yadav targets PM on nepotism, praises daughter for kidney donation

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and claimed “he is not a real Hindu” as he did not get tonsured when his mother Heeraba Modi died in December 2022.

According to Hindu customs, men should shave their heads when a parent dies.

Lalu Yadav made the remarks while addressing a ‘Jan Vishwas Maha Rally’ at the Gandhi Maidan in Patna, which was attended by several Opposition leaders, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge, as well as Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.

The former Bihar Chief Minister also targeted the Prime Minister for his remarks on nepotism, saying that “people with more children are subjected to humiliation over the issue”.

This was the first Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) rally held in Patna, as well as the first after Lalu Yadav underwent a kidney transplant in Singapore in 2022.

While taking potshots at the Prime Minister over nepotism, Lalu Yadav praised his daughter Rohini for donating her kidney to him.

The RJD chief also asserted that, despite multiple ailments, his work towards the people continued.

While appealing to defeat the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, he said, “Bihar has given lots of great personalities. In the same Gandhi Maidan, leaders of the country have held rallies and meetings.”

“Bihar is the land that drives the country. Bihar’s opinion has so much power that the people of the country imitate what Bihar decides,” he added.

On Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar switching sides to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the RJD chief said, “We never abused him when he broke the alliance with us.”

“Is he not ashamed of what he does? The BJP will be decimated in the coming polls. We stand united against the BJP,” he added.

Also addressing the rally, Kharge questioned PM Modi’s slogan “Modi Ki Guarantee” and asserted that Nitish Kumar will never be taken back to the Mahagathbandhan fold.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Centre was being benefitted by their corporate benefactors with loan waivers as small and medium businesses were affected under the pressure mounted by demonetisation and the enforcement of the Goods and Services Tax.

CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and Akhilesh Yadav claimed that the actual ‘Amrit Kaal’ will come only after the BJP is ousted from power.

US Elections 2024: Nikki Haley beats Donald Trump in Washington DC for first primary win!

Nikki Haley, the only remaining challenger to Donald Trump in the race, won 62.9% of the vote, versus 33.2% captured by the former president.

Presidential contender Nikki Haley won the Washington, D.C., Republican primary on Sunday, her first victory in the nominating process and a symbolic win for the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Edison Research said.

Haley, the only remaining challenger to Donald Trump in the race, won 62.9% of the vote, versus 33.2% captured by the former president.

She still faces near-impossible odds in her quest to win the Republican nomination to take on likely Democratic nominee President Joe Biden in November. Trump won the first eight nominating contests by significant margins before losing to Haley in America’s capital city.

The former president is also expected to win almost all nominating contests going forward, opinion polls show.

Washington, D.C., is 100% urban and a relatively high proportion of residents hold a college degree. The core of Trump’s base skews rural, and he is particularly strong in areas with low educational attainment.

The city also is home to a significant number of federal workers who Trump allies have pledged to fire en masse and replace with loyalists if he wins in November. Some categories of federal workers have seen an increase in death threats in recent years, and Trump often refers to the D.C. area as the “swamp.”

Haley will pick up 19 delegates from her win, a small portion of the 1,215 delegates needed to clinch the nomination.

Her victory could inoculate her from criticisms that she is unable to win a single nominating contest, though some Republicans will see her popularity in Washington as a negative. Many party leaders – Trump included – portray the city as crime-infested and run by out-of-touch elites.

This is not the first time Republicans in the capital have rejected Trump. During the last competitive Republican nominating contest in the District of Columbia, in 2016, Trump received less than 14% of the vote and no delegates, even as he went on to win the nomination nationally.

On Tuesday, voters in 15 states and one U.S. territory will caucus or go to the polls on the biggest day of nominating contests in the presidential primary. Known as Super Tuesday, 874 Republican delegates will be up for grabs.

The Democratic primary in Washington will be held in June.

Gautam Gambhir’s ‘serious’ message to KKR ahead of 2024 season: ‘IPL isn’t about Bollywood and after party…’

Gautam Gambhir made a statement that the players should not focus on the off-field activities but look to find the ways to help the team bag another title.

Gautam Gambhir's

Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir has ‘serious’ advice for his players ahead of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. Gambhir, who led KKR to two titles during his tenure as captain, said that IPL is not about Bollywood or other glamour attached to it but an opportunity for players to express themselves in the toughest league in the world.

KKR, who won their last IPL title way back in 2014, signed Gambhir as their mentor as the veteran Indian opener left Lucknow Super Giants after spending two years with them for a homecoming in Kolkata. He was present with other members of KKR at the IPL 2024 players’ auction where the franchise splurged a record-breaking INR 24.75 crore to sign Mitchell Starc.

“I made it very clear on Day 1 that IPL for me, a serious cricket. It’s not about Bollywood, it’s not about you, it’s not about after party and stuff. It’s about going out there and playing competitive cricket and that’s the reason why I feel is the toughest league in the world because it is proper cricket,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

The veteran batter pointed out the significance of the Indian Premier League on the world stage.

“It is probably closest to international cricket as compared to any other league and if you want to be known as a successful franchise, you should be able to deliver on the cricket field,” he added.

KKR are only the third franchise after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians to win multiple IPL titles. However, things have not worked out well for them in the last couple of seasons where they finished seventh spot and failed to reach the playoffs.

Gambhir also talked about the loyal fanbase of Kolkata which has backed the team during their tough times.

“I think there are very passionate fans. We need to be honest to them. We need to try and probably bring that happiness on their smiles because I’ve always believed I think the most loyal fans have been fans from Kolkata because they’ve gone through a lot in the first three years of the IPL,” Gambhir said.

The two-time IPL-winning captain further made a statement that the players should not focus on the off-field activities but look to find the ways to help the team bag another title.

“Obviously it was the most high profile team as well. But I’ve always been a believer that ultimately it’s not about glamour. It’s about what we do on the cricket fields is all that matters and KKR should not be known for off field activities. They should be known for what we deliver on the cricket field,” concluded the KKR mentor.

Byju’s delays salaries of over 20000 employees, Raveendran blames…

Raveendran further said that a select few (four out of its 150+ investors) have “stooped to a heartless level, ensuring that we are unable to utilise the funds raised to pay your hard-earned salaries”.

Edtech major Byju’s is yet to process the salaries of its employees for the month of February as the amount raised through the rights issue is currently locked in a separate account “at the behest” of some key investors, its founder and CEO Byju Raveendran has told employees.

In a letter to the staff, accessed by IANS, Raveendran said that the rights issue (which is about $250-$300 million) has been successfully closed.

“However, I regret to inform you that we will still be unable to process your salaries. Last month, we faced challenges due to a lack of capital, and now we are experiencing a delay despite having funds,” he told more than 20,000 employees.

Raveendran further said that a select few (four out of its 150+ investors) have “stooped to a heartless level, ensuring that we are unable to utilise the funds raised to pay your hard-earned salaries”.

“At their behest, the amount raised through the rights issue is currently locked in a separate account. It is an agonising reality that some of these investors have already reaped substantial profits – in fact, one of them has made a staggering eight times their initial investment in Byju’s”.

The Bengaluru bench of National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has directed Byju’s that the proceeds from the rights issue is to be kept in a separate account till the disposal of the case with investors.

Raveendran said that despite his best efforts, “we are left with no option but to confront the heart-wrenching reality that we are temporarily unable to provide you with the financial support you deserve”.

“We are striving to ensure that your salaries are paid by the 10th of March. We shall make these payments the moment we are permitted to do so as per law.”

CSK Suffer major injury blow ahead of IPL 2024 as Devon Conway ruled out until May!

Devon Conway injured his thumb during the T20I series against Australia

Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings suffered a major injury blow three weeks before the start of their title defence as opener Devon Conway has been ruled out of action until May. Conway, who was the player of the match in Chennai’s win against Gujarat Titans in the 2023 final, will be sidelined for almost eight weeks after it was revealed that he underwent surgery on his left thumb last week.

Conway injured his thumb during the T20I series against Australia and hence skipped the ongoing Test series. The decision to have surgery was taken following a medical consultation. The recovery period is estimated to be around eight weeks, which implies that the left-handed opener won’t be available for more than half of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, which will kick off on March 22 with CSK taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Conway made his IPL debut in 2022 after CSK roped in the New Zealand star for his base price of INR 1 crore at the Mega Auction. In 23 appearances for the franchise, he scored 924 runs at 48.63 with nine fifties. His best performance came last season, when he amassed 672 runs in 16 matches, laced with six fifties.

With Conway slated to be absent, CSK could try out fellow New Zealand batter Rachin Ravindra, who was roped in for INR 1.8 crore at the auction last December following his stellar show at the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup in India.

Ravindra too had suffered an injury scare during the T20I contest against Australia as he was benched for the second match following a knee pain. However, he had recovered in time to make an appearance for New Zealand in the first Test against the Aussies, where he had scored a fifty in the second innings in Wellington.

Last month, IPL announced the schedule for only the first 21 games of the 2024 season. The remainder of the schedule will be released after the announcement of the Indian general election dates. CSK will play four matches during this period – against RCB, Gujarat Titans, Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, respectively. Their opening two matches will be played at home, and the other two are away games.

A tourist driving in the early morning dark on the southern tip of Hawaii’s Big Island accidentally drove his rented Jeep off a cliff but was able to swim to shore until firefighters pulled him up with a rope and helicopter.

The man was treated for facial injuries and slight hypothermia after Sunday’s rescue, the Hawaii County Fire Department said in a news release.

Firefighters, police and the US Coast Guard responded to the cliffs of South Point in Naalehu at about 3.45 am on Sunday to a report of a swimmer in distress in the ocean, the release said.

He swam about 100 yards to shore at the bottom of a cliff the fire department estimated to be 50-60 feet.

Big Island resident Michael Moody was camping nearby to go spearfishing when the commotion from the rescue woke him up. By then, the tourist was already in the water, Moody said on Thursday.

The road there is dangerous for those who aren’t familiar with it, he said.

“It goes from a big major road to a dirt road,” he said. “And that’s only about 100 feet (30.48 meters) long, and then it gets really steep, and that’s only about 20 feet (6 meters) long. And then that’s the edge.”

Police told KITV the man, 27, was visiting from Canada.

“We have terrible things that happen because tourists don’t know what they’re doing,” Moody said.

The rescue required 16 people and could have been dangerous for those involved because of the high surf in the area, said Mayor Mitch Roth.

“A lot of resources,” Roth said. “It sounds like a careless act.”

While it’s known among locals as a fishing spot, it’s not a popular destination for tourists — especially at that hour, Roth said.
