When the league became aware of odd betting patterns about Porter’s play in a game on March 20, the inquiry got underway. The NBA was informed by the league that Porter had provided a betting with information about his health before that game, and another person, who was reportedly an NBA bettor, wagered $80,000 on the possibility that Porter would miss the points that were assigned to him in parlays via an online sports book. $1.1 million would have been gained on the wager.
Porter took himself out of that game after only a few minutes, claiming illness, none of his stats meeting the totals set in the parlay. The bet was frozen and not paid out, and the NBA started an investigation.
“There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams, and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment,” Silver said.
Silver cautioned last week that this move was possible, saying what Porter was accused of represented a “cardinal sin” in the NBA. Porter has not commented since the investigation began, and never played for the Raptors again — he was listed as out for all of Toronto’s games for the remainder of the season citing personal reasons.
In addition, the league found that Porter, the brother of Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr., wagered on NBA games with a minimum of thirteen different betting accounts. The bets were placed in increments of $15 to $22,000; a total of $54,094 was staked, yielding a payment of $76,059, or net gains of $21,965.
According to the NBA, Porter was not involved in any of those bets. However, three of the bets involved several game parlays, one of which saw Porter place a bet on the Raptors to lose. Those three bets were all lost.
